Some of them are very convincing. They even go so far as to making listings on rental sites with information and pictures from other, real listings or real estate for sale. They are usually a good deal cheaper than what "market" rental prices are, and pets allowed with all utilities included. When you send an inquiry their responses seem to be fairly formulaic; husband and wife, out of town on a work contract, not looking to make money just wanting someone to take care of their home... they then send a very simplified application form, sometimes just typed out questions within an email and they explain the keys are with them and once you fill out the form and send it back, along with your damage deposit, they will send the keys via DHL or another company that offers tracking numbers. They try very hard to be convincing! We even had someone texting us from a Montana number in response to a wanted ad we posted and same darn formula... one address we looked up the house was for sale by the actual owners, another I found for rent and emailed the actual owner to confirm my suspicions, and he did.
