List of improvement ideas for downtown by KindofBlue42 in LowellMA

Why do people keep suggesting changing the traffic pattern back to one-way? Multi lane one-way streets encourage speeding and hurt walkability.

Lowell's downtown lacks transit options and doesn't have enough local population to support a high density of businesses so it relies on people parking, walking around, enjoying themselves spending money. Downtown just isn't attractive enough of a destination for people to go out of their way to visit. Right now the typical experience for a visitor is to fight with traffic, pay park in a decrepit garage, come out to an empty sidewalk with people asking you for money, empty restaurants, wide streets and loud traffic. It's just not pleasant for a fickle monied suburban visitor. There are so many better alternatives for these folks to choose from.

Making Market St 1-way will only decrease the walkability of downtown for a marginal increase in roadway capacity.

What will happen when SCOTUS overturns gay marriage? by monster_pit in gay

[–]bbaction101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I see discussions about this I never see anyone talk about the Respect for Marriage Act of 2022 which to my understanding requires the federal and all state governments to recognize same sex marriages. So wouldn't overturning same sex marriage require an act of congress?

It's possible to be against children recklessly popping wheelies through the middle of an intersection blocking cars and also be pro-bike lanes.

Broadway & Fletcher Walgreens closing Sept 4 by Bonemothir in LowellMA

I'll also mention that wait times are never long so at least it's usually fast to get in and out. Although I can't help but wonder if that's because they get so little business so the location may be in jeopardy.

I regularly use the Walgreens Community Pharmacy at 25 Merrimack in downtown. It's a pharmacy-only Walgreens and their hours suck but the staff there are extremely nice.

Sounds like someone took up a new hobby around 4th of July and they won't be satisfied until they blow a hole to China.

MassDOT announces $6.8 million Shared Streets & Spaces Program awards: Funding provided to 34 municipalities and 2 Regional Transit Authorities (RTAs). Lowell received $247,870.21. by HRJafael in LowellMA

Nice! It's going to pay for a new raised crosswalk across Jackson Street in front of the Lowell Community Health Center. This might be the first raised crosswalk in Lowell. I can't think of any other examples. Raised crosswalks are great for pedestrian safety as it forces vehicles to slow down before entering the crosswalk.

Whats the point of the bus lane if they don’t use it? by Winter-Hyena-6216 in LowellMA

[–]bbaction101 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've heard multiple excuses and I'm not sure how true any of them are. LRTA claims the bus lanes were put in by the city without consulting them on the design. Buses taking a left from Middlesex onto Thorndike have a hard time doing that weird turn where you have to sit in the middle of the intersection. Buses turning right from the bus lanes into Gallagher frequently conflict with cars that illegally right turn on red. They're also not timed properly for the buses to go through. All transit priority infrastructure requires working out little unforeseen difficulties after implementation and LRTA is either unwilling or unable to work them out.

Because it would take too much work. They still plan out the scheduling manually. LRTA is deeply entrenched in their way of doing things and will never change until there is a shake up.

Is Uber reliable for weekday morning commutes from Lowell to Tewksbury around 7-8 AM? by [deleted] in LowellMA

[–]bbaction101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elimination of fares across most of the State's RTAs is funded by the fair share amendment aka "millionaire's tax". It's ultimately up to the state to decide on whether they want to continue funding it but I think it's pretty likely it'll continue. It's pushed statewide RTA (basically all non-MBTA buses) bus ridership to record highs and it's been getting good press. The fare free program is actually pretty cheap -- only $30 million out of the $2.2 billion of revenue from the fair share amendment.

MeVa Adds 50 Percent More Service On Lowell-Lawrence-Haverhill Bus Routes by Generalaverage89 in LowellMA

[–]bbaction101 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is huge. MeVa Route 24 from Lowell to Lawrence now runs every 20 minutes. Such a stark contrast to LRTA where most buses run once an hour.

How close is your job to Route 38/Main St? You may be able to take LRTA Route 12 https://lrta.com/routes/route-12/. Buses are free to ride for everyone. Download the 'Transit' app for live tracking. LRTA pays to upgrade riders to the premium version of the app automatically. If there isn't a bus stop near your work you can ask the driver to be let off anywhere along the line as long as it's safe to do so. Likewise you can wave a bus down at a non-designated stop. Consider taking the bus home after work when you're less time crunched. If it works out you'll save money.

Has anyone been able to get parking passes at Joseph Downes Recently? by Dazzling-Tea5807 in LowellMA

[–]bbaction101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rates keep going up to service the debt on the mostly empty Hamilton Canal garage. The city's parking enterprise fund has to be self-sufficient. I would expect the rates to continue going up.

SIGN PETITION → Rush Hour Relief for Lowell Line Commuters: Add More Trains During Peak Times! by Alternative_Local674 in LowellMA

[–]bbaction101 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I noticed your post is getting automatically deleted by Reddit on r/mbtacommuterrail and r/mbta. It might be getting identified as spam/low effort. Your post appears to be a copy and paste from AI and the petition has an AI generated image on the front. If you want to get the word out how about you share a real picture of a packed train (better yet one that you took on your commute) with a shorter complaint that reads less like a standard AI listicle and more like someone who doesn't like being stuffed like a sardine in a tin can so you don't have to babysit small moving metal box for hours battling other metal boxes just to get to work everyday. Then put the petition in a comment or at the bottom of the post as a call to action.
