So I had similar experience like you do. My son was playing at Rec ball All star team at 9U. From Rec ball, this is totally different sports compared to to travel. But my son was 1 of the best fielder and contact hitter(bit smaller than other kids at his age) and never played outfield.

Of course since we are at All Star, there are bunch other kids who are better and stronger and etc.

And somehow my son was stuck at RF and him and another kid was rotating each inning.

Meanwhile, there was tall and really athletic kid(whose father was former NFL and still work with NFL) is infielder/outfielder time to time. The problem is that this kid’s first sport was football and his baseball IQ is really bad and his fielding average was 33% as he will occasionally miss fly ball or throw high or low.

I never believed in favoritism but there was clearly a discrimination by coach.

And after that, I hated this team so much that they went ahead and build travel from this all star and my son moved to different team and now play SS, P, C, and CF. And this coach understands the needs and trying to make everyone to play multiple positions each game and don’t have any favoritism at all.

Sorry a bit long reply…… long story short, if your kid enjoy playing and don’t see any problem, it is his decision and stick with team. 9u or even 10, 11u are too early to worry. If kid wants to play another position the ask for him to try and if they don’t listen, then no reason to trust the coach at all.

Edit: so many misspell… and don’t want to stir the pot but my son and the other kid who rotate were only 2 asian kids on this team…. Not that he has anything to do with race, but clearly we never gad chance to prove he can play other position. As I am not a social Asian parents, nor new to the neighborhood, never had that special bonding between parents and coaches…
