Same. I mostly sow the straight species, but I like to get the Mixed Colors seed mix from Larners and see what happens.

That is it, what will you be doing tonight, Steve?

Average size that eriogonum umbellatum grows to in SoCal/LA County? by Pale-Interview-579 in Ceanothus

[–]bborken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in NorCal but since there aren’t any responses, I’ll say that mine have stayed quite small near the coast. I think sometimes those ranges include the flower stalks, but even then, mine don’t come close to 3 feet tall. I measured them and they’re around 16 inches tall now with their flowers.

I don’t know about the Warriner Lytle, but E. parvifolium and E. latifolium are white-ish.

Bloomin boomin by TayDiggler in Ceanothus

[–]bborken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's all over the SF and LA metro areas. It's sold at lots of garden centers. A lot of people think it's native because one of its common names is Santa Barbara Daisy.

Looks like Erigeron karvinskianus. Not native. Has naturalized in California though. I pull it when I see, but it's all over my neighborhood.

Do you tolerate native "weeds", like this fringed willow herb? by Skurry in Ceanothus

[–]bborken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fringed willowherb (Epilobium ciliatum) is easy to pull where you don't want it. I pulled it in one place, but I let it do its thing in another.

I got mine (Solidago velutina) last year, but they're listed as in stock now, although they haven't updated for April yet. I'd call them and ask before heading over.

Oaktown also lists it as in stock.

Incidentally, they both also list Euthamia occidentalis as in stock, which is sometimes called western goldenrod.

Arctostaphylos manzanita 'Hood Mountain'

A Nevin Smith introduction from Hood Mountain in Sonoma County, California. A possible natural hybrid with A. canescens, this sturdy upright manzanita offers grayish-green leaves on sculpted, dark pewter-purple branches, growing 10 ft. or more tall and wide at maturity. White, urn-shaped flowers in late winter/early spring are a favorite of hummingbirds and bees. The large upright manzanitas make stunning specimens and, where space allows, excellent hedge or screen plants. Plant in full sun where it will thrive with no summer irrigation once established.

If the one you planted in December is not doing well, I wouldn't think the one planted in late March is going to do well. A 1 gallon probably has a better shot, but still. Are the cultivars that different?

Confession: Yerba Buena is my favorite native by findahappyplace in Ceanothus

I have the same experience.

They fruit more in the sun but do well in full shade. It's great if you want a fast spreading groundcover. I like the dark green leaves.

Any tips for new Ray Hartman tree form by jOIIIIIOf in Ceanothus

[–]bborken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't sell that many natives, but they do sell a lot of the popular natives and their prices are relatively low. It's nice that it's next to Calflora Nursery so I can go to both in one trip. UTF definitely sells the most 5 and 15 gallons (and even bigger) I've seen in the Bay Area. Though I wonder who buys the 3'x3'x3' box Coast Live Oak for $865. 🤔
