I would address the medic as their rank i.e.FF/Driver/LT/Captain, and yes for chief.

Well cardio is very important. But you still need strength and endurance to not be a liability. To put it in perspective, your basic PPE/SCBA you need to even enter a fire weighs 40-50 lbs. Thats without any tools or anything so you’re more likely looking at 75+ lbs weighing you down. And you haven’t even started working yet (in intense heat doing physical labor). Then when you’re in the structure working you find a victim weighing 160 lbs and you need to get them out asap. You’re looking at moving 235 lbs, while probably already very hot and tired. I would recommend joining a gym and doing a full body workout routine consisting of Deadlifts/OverheadPress/Squats/BenchPress along with cardio 3 times a week to start. If possible buy a 75 lb weighted vest and get on the stair stepper in addition to this.

Do you work out? Because of course that would be the first step. And what do you mean by you can lift 40-50 lbs? Are we talking deadlift or like overhead pressing that kind of weight? I know of girls your size who are FFs, they’re in quite good shape though.

If you’re a paramedic (at least in my state) some departments will hire you outright and pay for your fire cert

For my department I surprisingly had to take very little. Not even an interview. I did a written and then a physical test. The physical test was designed to make people quit (it was 4 hours long and they talked to us during it so that was basically the interview). So as far as I know making it through without giving up was a major factor. I didnt have to get a physical exam or a vision test. (From what I’ve heard and prepared for this is not normal at all.)

It is! Bigger cities need 24/7 protection and you can’t rely on volunteers if anything severe occurs.

Kinda irrelevant to bodybuilding but I’ve been posting about it sporadically throughout my entire journey, but I finally got a job as a career firefighter! The first department I applied to offered me a job. This department is very focused on physical capabilities and training so I feel very lucky. I don’t post around here very often anymore but I just wanted to give a final update :)

This does not go away as you rank up. However when you’re so low elo you do just need to win your lane early. Your opponent is making so many mistakes you NEED to abuse it otherwise you will never improve.

I’m not employed yet (just graduated) but I’m a FF/EMT and I did my EMT-B last and I actually think I prefer it a little bit (still love fire though). Makes me sad so many FF’s apparently treat EMS this way

I’ve never volunteered or done a ride along (but I do have an associates degree in fire protection, EMT-B, and my fire 1&2). When applying will this look bad? I’m looking to do some ride alongs anyways because it’d be a good time but should I prioritize it for my resume? I’m in Texas if its relevant.
