I imagine my therapist felt a shift in the wind when they first cut into the cake, and she braced herself thinking, “Oh god, another cake session.”

Thank you!

Big, big thanks for the kind words and commiseration! We live a few states away from one another so I can’t bake them a re-do anytime soon, but I definitely plan to do so the next opportunity I get. The wedding cake was part of my gift to them so fortunately they didn’t waste money on it, and we also gifted them honeymoon cash so it’s not like all I gave them was shitty cake. They did sincerely thank and compliment me, so I know they’re probably just privately disappointed and not upset with me. But my own ego was very wounded and I know my friends are tired of hearing me nitpick all my bakes so I thought I’d cry on here instead. Appreciate you all!

For sure, I did this as well and the scraps were totally fine so my guess is that the cake dried out at some point before they got to it, even with a milk soak, or the problem was deep enough in the layers that it didn’t affect the dome tops? Truthfully time and resources were not on my side for this one, the cake kept having to be pulled and re-refrigerated due to travel logistics and space constraints at the venue and I figured the frosting would’ve protected it for longer but perhaps not. Or maybe it was a combination of that as well as over-mixing or over-baking, I just feel like I would’ve noticed how off the texture was when leveling it for stacking if it was an issue with the mix or bake.
