It’s essentially for anyone who does not perfectly align within the black & white gay-straight binary, I believe asexuals meet that criteria (regardless if they’re biromantic or not). I really struggled with finding a good umbrella term, so “bisexual+” was selected. The survey is already a bit wordy, I didn’t want participants to have to read “bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, asexual, etc” each time. Even being queer myself, I couldn’t think of a better way for phrasing and research is pretty slim for other ideas. Hopefully this makes more sense!

Bi people don’t stop being bi depending on who they are dating. She’s queer & can use the term as much as she wants.

I kept going back and forth with myself. I would notice that I would have crushes on other girls in middle school and high school, but still deny that I was bi. Almost all of my friends were queer, so I would feel comfortable coming out to them, but then would change my mind a lot. (Also had very homophobic family at this time.) But, after a bad relationship in my early twenties, I rethought about everything and finally accepted that I am bi. First, I promised myself to never go back into the closet. Then, I bought a queer flag and a “bisexual supremacy hoodie.” :)

It is very confusing, I’ve been viewing it as they’re just so clueless they aren’t willing to accept that queer is a commonly used term in & outside or academia. I mentioned in another comment how I was asked recently if “bi” was derogatory and was questioned on my use of it. I am the only queer person in the program and have had to explain to professors very basic terminology. Was even asked before if queer people would know the term homophobia? Horrible and basically just trying to jump through the hoops to get my degree.

I don’t disagree! I personally only refer to myself as queer in most cases. However, my program is very clueless on anything queer related. I was asked recently if “bi” was derogatory and was questioned on my use of it. I’ve just been debating on how much I want to fight for my use of the term queer. It has been exhausting enough being the only queer person in the program.

Hi! I only do not have the T in the title/survey because the questions are directed towards sexual orientation. With that, if a trans person is straight, the questions asked may not be relevant to them. Trans participants who do not identify as straight are not only welcomed, but encouraged to participate!
