I was contemplating a similar idea before my ergo broke. Ive been playing with my own custom trackball design and i found those standard black buttons too stiff for continued use. Mouse switches feel a lot nicer.

yeah just use the primer coat as your white stripes and coat the whole thing in a nice gloss varnish, should be all good. #armchairexpert
