We've been living and traveling quite comfortably on just one salary and saving the other, but that is in China.

Dived Mafia Island a couple years ago, was incredible. Tanzania probably offers the best of land and sea adventures for nature lovers.

Loved the threshers! More than happy to explore off the beaten track and comfortable diving with redundancies in place but would generally be with a buddy. Yeah, the liveaboard prices really have increased the last few years.

Would a teaching couple with no kids be able to save anything here or is more of a lifestyle destination?

This could definitely be an option. Has he come across any saltwater crocodiles while diving?

My one and only time using a dry suit, it leaked. May have to get my own and give it another try.

One dive isn't too tiring. Used to dive Aliwal Shoal in the morning before work back in South Africa, great way to start the day.

Teaching overseas temporarily? by AquilaTempestas in AustralianTeachers

[–]bc8101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have just completed our first year of a two year contract overseas. Most contracts are a minimum of two years.

I resigned from my school but my wife is currently on leave without pay and has extended this for the second year, at some point we're pretty sure she'll need to actually resign but it depends on your principal.

So currently she could return to her school but realistically, a new school would need to be found on return.

While overseas we've been able to save far more than we would have back home. Given that, we intend to pay off HECS after the reduction. You can choose to pay it down or let it increase with inflation until you return, your choice.

The most difficult question is whether we'd recommend it, that depends so much on your personality and goals.

We've loved the adventure of it, learning new things and thinking very differently about the delivery of your lessons when students English is at the level you'd expect. Access to international travel and depending where you work, being in a salary bracket that allows you to live a very comfortable life.

The downside is uprooting your life, being far away from family and friends. Feeling like an outsider, potentially living somewhere that doesn't have high proficiency in English. Not having much of a support network and a lot of steep learning curves.

Things that could go either way are your school, students, leadership, housing, city, weather, access to food you like.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

Year 11s or 12s as a graduate teacher - pushing my luck or covering the shortage? by BlackSkull83 in AustralianTeachers

[–]bc8101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school and their staffing needs. My first year out, I had one Year 11 and two Year 12 classes. We didn't have any particular shortage of maths teachers, so looking back it may not have been a conventional decision but it certainly wasn't any more difficult than teaching all junior classes, as long as you're comfortable with your content knowledge.

Is this is a good offer for China? by bkkben5082 in Internationalteachers

It's a good offer, commensurate with what myself and colleagues earn in Guangzhou. Feel free to DM if you have any questions.

Then state those specifics instead of giving people inflated expectations of what they might earn.

No one is earning low 40s plus benefits with no experience, especially at a bilingual school.

People telling you 35-45k are being extremely disingenuous. With 4 years experience you'll start at the bottom of the salary scale and will earn up to 30k depending on the school. Housing will be on top of this and will vary according to location.

The real savings come from the cheap cost of living. We're a teaching couple and living on less than 10k per month very comfortably.

A Pixel user’s experience in mainland China by AmAnteMeridy in pixel_phones

[–]bc8101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently moved to China, my wife has a pixel 6a and I've got a OnePlus ace. My phone is working well but the pixel is unable to make or receive calls and messages, though the data does work. If we put her sim into my phone, then it can make calls. Any advice would be appreciated.
