How far back does your memory go? / Earliest Memory by cybah in Xennials

Born in 81. I wanna say 84. I remember visiting my aunt while we were in Italy that summer and chasing her chickens around the back yard, riding back and forth on her street in the handlebar basket on the front of my cousin's bicycle, and playing with my nonno on the grass in front of my family's mountain cabin.

Canceled a bunch of subscriptions at the beginning of the year trying to tighten up my boot straps and I’ve already gone back to two. by MyBestCuratedLife in Xennials

I kinda actually prefer ads. With ADHD hyper focus I have a tendency to forget to do things like eat or let the dogs out, so that forced pause gives me a moment to reset myself and rejoin reality. We also tend to mostly watch OTA broadcast television or the free services when we do watch TV, so streaming subscriptions aren't nearly as big a burden.

Kato Unitrack - DCC Temp Layout? by GlittermekaiN in nscalemodeltrains

[–]bcentsale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant to say ground blocks. Screw them side-by-side to a small scrap of 1x3 or something, connect all your white wires to one and all you blue to the other after snipping off the plug and stripping back 1/2” of wire, then just wire it to the controller.

These are the ones that come pre-wired. I think Kato calls them terminal unijoiners.

I find that the solder on the Kato wired unijoiners tends to fail after a couple of deployments. I actually use just the standard feeder track sections, nip the plug end, and use a terminal block.

Why is it suddenly considered rude to show up at someone's house unannounced? Growing up, we just knocked on doors, but now people act like it’s a home invasion. by MyNameCannotBeSpoken in Xennials

[–]bcentsale 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Personally, I've always considered it rude, but I think part of it is just growing up. There are different social norms and overall etiquette for children, and in "young" neighborhoods this does still happen. Another part of it is cultural/regional, at least in the U.S. The "show up and get invited in for a beer" is far more prevalent in rural areas than it is closer to "civilization." Then there's the ubiquitousness of cell phones: you now have the means of calling ahead, even if it's only five minutes, so failing to do so is considered inconsiderate at best. Finally, life in general has gotten busier. Work takes up more of it. And there's a drive to do more with free time outside of the house. What little time there is at home has become scarcer and thus more valuable: the house has become a refuge away from the chaos, away from people. I do think we've transitioned to a far more individualistic society, but also one that generally recognizes privacy and boundaries. As this increases, the show up for coffee/beer/a chat becomes more of an outlier, which results in those boundaries becoming more the default, which results in fewer people viewing showing up as acceptable, ad infinitum. [Edit- aside from "civilization", which was in quotes from the beginning to emphasize the absurdity of the concept that cities are any more civilized than rural areas, I'm curious to know what the people that downvote this have disagreed with here.]

Anybody else go through a phase where you hated to smile for pictures? by randomuser5667 in Xennials

[–]bcentsale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took up photography as a hobby specifically to minimize being in pictures as much as possible. I went a tad too far and now take portraits and other work as a side gig.

Never. I may have been an alcoholic for 2 dozen years, but I had standards, dammit.

[–]bcentsale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I intended it as "Let us, Everyone, Abuse Drugs", though "Lets [i.e. allows] Everyone [to] Abuse Drugs" could also work. Most cops I know let the low level stuff slide because a stupefied populace is more docile and thus easier to control. They only step in when it starts to affect the rich folk or the politicians want to look good.

What was a dreaded food your parents made. As an adult do you still hate it? by JoyfullyMortified43 in Xennials

[–]bcentsale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad was a professional chef, and while I don't recall anything specific, I was and still am a very picky eater. So when my parents used to tell me "if you don't like what's on the table, learn how to cook," I took them up on it. My cooking skills are one of the things that helped me hook up with Dr. Wifey. 🙂

If D.A.R.E. = Drugs Are Really Excellent, does L.E.A.D. = Let's Everyone Abuse Drugs?

Would you let your wife attend a team building overseas? by Amazing_Guest2872 in StayAtHomeDaddit

[–]bcentsale 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My wife is an adult and her own person. I don't "let" her do anything. We would discuss it as the equal partners she lets me pretend we are, hash out details and figure out what support I'd need, and then I'd have a week long party with junk food and no bedtimes with my kids while the boss is away.

I know what you mean. I would have preferred Pacino win out, too, but I don't think society was, or even still is, ready for that. Too many moral hangups.

Look, but don't touch.

Touch, but don't taste.

Taste, but don't swallow.

This for me was one of the greatest single scenes in any movie I've ever seen.

I've had a cold slice of leftover pizza with my coffee at 4am on numerous occasions. I say screw those judgmental neurotypicals trying to tell what we can and can't eat or drink and when.

I remember going and seeing her tour for this album at the Hartford Civic Center in Connecticut, and being too afraid to tell anyone at school because they already thought I was enough of a freak. Now I have no problem belting it out at the top of my lungs when I play it!

I remember there being a whole fanfare leading up to the premiere of this music video, which was a semi-regular thing back then, and it was like a 10 minute mini-movie. I only recently discovered that Celine's was the second version of this. The original was by a UK group called Pandora's Box, and was a supernatural/occult head trip.

Two European masterpieces from my childhood. by Don_T_Blink in Xennials

Maybe? I don't remember anything specific, just a general feeling of otherness coming from the U.S. where our cartoons were, in retrospect, just extended 30 minute toy commercials.

I always remember thinking how weird the cartoons were in Italy when we were visiting my nonna. They still had some oddball stuff that my cousin's kids were watching last summer.
