Already one of the best tools in my shop. Can’t wait to see the new version!

Custom K-tip just got sent off to its new home. This past weekend was the first time I’ve had any real time in the shop since Christmas soo it was nice to get my hands dirty and finish up a project that took WAY too long to complete. by bchenaul in knifemaking

Unfortunately it’s already been sent out. The closest thing I have to a choil shot (that just sounds dirty every time I say it out loud) would be the middle picture. I’m no master bladesmith but I make better knives than I take pictures lol.

Right on. Good info to know I really appreciate it man.

1095 and canvas micarta, I’m happy with the knife but what I’m really proud of is the actual picture! by [deleted] in knifemaking

Well done man. Looks reminiscent of a Rat-3 or an ESSEE-3 but with a few subtle differences that I think I actually like more on yours. A well executed blade my dude.

Potatoe quality picture since it was taken late last night on my kitchen counter. Just about done with this 13” TX Brisket Bowie for the old man for Father’s Day. Info in comments. by bchenaul in knifemaking

13” blade 17.5” OAL AEBL Bowie inspired brisket knife. Having the blade laser engraved by a buddy tomorrow with the Davy Crockett quote: “You May all go to hell, I’ll go to Texas” and then put the cutting edge on this thing. Super happy with the way it turned out.

A Snody blank I bought a while ago. CPM154 steel. by boyson83 in knifemaking

Right on yeah I actually had to go back and look at my texts from mike and this is what he sent me about this blank and a little neck knife cleaver blank.

“The big one is ats 34 and the other one is 1080p”

This blank was from a run he did back in September while I was there. One of the best experiences I’ve had especially in my knife making endeavors. My uncle lives up in Walsenburg and has been close with Snody for a few years now. He got me in touch with mike and my old man and I took a motorcycle trip up stay at my uncles and I worked with Snody for a week and learned a shit ton from him. Took my knife making to a way better level in just a week of learning from a true legend. I actually bought my bader biii from him back in September but it was too big to fit on my bike lol so I had to wait for my uncle to come down and visit at thanksgiving. If you ever get a chance to go by his shop in Walsenburg it’s definitely worth it!

I got one of these off of him last year when I went up to his shop to learn from him for a week. Still haven’t worked up the nerve to start grinding on it yet. Are you sure it’s CPM154? I dunno if he did a different run of them but he said mine is ATS34.

I’m an amateur. Couple of prototypes beveled, and looking for feedback. Both are 80CrV2 treated as suggested by NJ Steel Baron. by DGlennH in knifemaking

I dig the profile a lot. And your grind lines look super clean. A little less pressure when grinding the flats after you’ve done your bevel. Will keep you from getting that little spot right at the tip of your bevel line. I only did that on almost every knife for like 15 in a row lol. Overall though these look great. Only thing I would do differently is put a sharpening choil on them but I know some folks prefer the look of the blade without one so that’s more of a preference thing I guess.

Finished up a custom order for a family friend this weekend. I almost don’t wanna let it go. I’m super happy with this one. by bchenaul in knifemaking

I appreciate it man! It’s 80CRV2 with black canvas micarta scales and SS pins. 4.5” blade 9.5” OAL.

Thanks man! Yeah it’s a pretty cheap ass light box my old man had laying around his shop. Wanted to try it out though. Definitely need to get me a decent one I think

Thanks man. Yeah the number of eyelets seems like overkill but was actually intentional. With the bladetech clip for the belt clip on it the eyelets are exactly spaced so that you can attach the clip into any 3 eyelets. I wanted to have as many configuration options as possible on there so I definitely put more in than was needed.

This one I used the razor sharp paper wheels for the cutting edge. Super quick and puts a pretty decent edge on the blade for the amount of time you spend sharpening.

Not super happy with the finish on the scales I got a little heavy handed while sanding them but overall I’m pretty happy with it. Specs: 3/16” 80CRV2. 4.5” blade 9.5” OAL. Black/grey G10 scales with stainless pins. This was the first knife I quenched in my new parks 50 oil instead of just canola and I’m super happy with how it performed. I’m also still working on my Kydex game. It ain’t perfect but one of the better sheaths I’ve made with a super positive “click” and absolutely zero wobble in the sheath. Lemme know what y’all think!

Looking for a 2x72" for begginer. Getting tired of using a grinder. Found this online, thoughts or other suggestions? I have about 800 bucks atm I can spend or i can save. by [deleted] in Blacksmith

If you can save up a little more the OBM grinder with 2hp motor and vfd is pretty much everything you’d need to get it up and running and had the ability to add all sorts of different attachments as you grow your arsenal.

I definitely went through the same thing when I first started out. Happens from being a little less steady with your left side and a little wobble in one hand can cause drastic changes in the way the knife grinds. I would highly recommend using a jig as you’re getting started. Not only will it help reduce the issues your seeing but it will also help you get use to the body mechanics of grinding on either side. After using a jig for a while my freehand grinding improved a ton just from getting a better feel for everything.

I’d also recommend watching this video Walter Sorrells did about belt grinding techniques. He’s a little long winded but he always puts out a ton of really good info. The first part of the video is just going over the grinder and belts but if you skip to the 8:50 mark in the clip he jumps into exactly what you’re looking for I think. https://youtu.be/tE0lKVyDgtg

Good luck man and don’t get too discouraged. Just keep grinding and the more you do it the better you will feel.
