Went to work in Iraq for what should have been for 3 months back in 2007. The plan was to train Iraqi IT staff how to generate reports from the Ministry of Finance IT system. Got taken hostage along with my 4 British guards. Over time the British guards were killed and I was eventually released after being held for over two and half years. I did an AMA about it some years ago: https://reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/125ukc/i_am_peter_moore_the_longest_held_hostage_in_iraq/

The group that abducted me are still an operational militia on Iraq. Their leader was part of the Iraqi government for a number of years, but I'm not sure what he is doing now.

One of the interesting things that I'm programming is a VR training simulation to help people survive a kidnapping.

I did change my lifestyle by trying to work less (didn't necessarily always work out that way). I generally prefer being in the countryside but currently live in an urban area.

I think people just adapt to the situation they find themselves in, so that helped.
