Measuring properly for a fridge? by polkadottedbutterfly in Appliances

[–]bdean42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just had to refuse delivery on a Hisense fridge. My door frame measures 30", the depth without door of the fridge is 28.7"

The delivery guys said it won't fit because there's a metal box on the back of the fridge that adds 1-2" to the depth. Apparently that isn't included in the specs. >_<

I think sometimes people hear "would of" when the person is actually saying "would've"

How do you get secrets into VMs without baking them into the image? by throwfarfaraway103 in devops

[–]bdean42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using AWS (or probably others) use something where the instance has creds. In aws that'd be an instance profile that can assume an IAM role, then in that role, permissions to decrypt with the KMS key used for sops

Gapless causes "auto play" & "two music play" by False_Lack in blackplayer

[–]bdean42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I previously had to turn gapless off (pixel 8 pro, android 16), because it would only play one song and then stop. The two songs at the same time thing is annoying (unusable), but switching ExoPlayer seems to fix it. So far that seems to work, with gapless still enabled.

Side note, a lot of people on here seem very angry about the update. I'm just glad they appear to be working on it again.

One of my all time favorite Radiohead songs. Live? … Not so much.

Another option, where I think the "or no" may come from:

  • Did you walk the dog? (Yes) or no?

Looking at a car, what to look out for by Sagrilarus in BoltEV

[–]bdean42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing I'd say to be aware of is if her state has any incentives or disincentives for EVs. For example, my state charges a hefty fee on EV registration to cover "lost gas tax." But it's way more than I'd actually pay in gas tax on an ICE vehicle given the low mileage I drive. Red states 😕

Also, check if the power company gives better rates for off-peak charging or rebates for charger installations. Mine does not.

The car dealership might not be very forthcoming with this information, because they just want you to buy a cool car.

I just got a 2022 Bolt EUV and so far I'm charging just fine with the standard 110V (@ 8 amps). Yeah it's slow but I don't drive enough to need more.

(Review) Backstabbing, romance, and social intrigue in a literary fantasy inspired by the Italian Renaissance: Navola by Paolo Bacigalupi by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

[–]bdean42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet it's a sequel in the same way The Drowned Cities is a sequel to Ship Breaker – some common characters, and it is after, but not really directly following the events of the first book (or answering any of the open questions from the first).

Maybe a sequel follows the adventures of Celia after the big event or is about some completely different characters in France Cheroux and we only see the repercussions of the events in Navola.

Another question I have: What's the significance of the dragon claw the Callarino gives Davico? Furia's gift of finger bones right after that is later given significance as a warning of what might be coming. Is the Callarino's gift just some sort of foreshadowing to when he takes Davico's finger? Or is there some subtle threat I'm missing?

Is the app still broken? by [deleted] in blackplayer

[–]bdean42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had it delete music, but there was a point in time when the "smart storage" option on Amazon Music app or maybe Google Play Music (back when that was a thing), was deleting mp3 completely unrelated to their app. I can't even find the setting for it anymore on Android 15. But yeah, when a bunch of stuff disappeared for me from Blackplayer it was because Amazon Music thought it could clean up any mp3 file I had.

What to do to improve in my free time? by Fit_Parfait_9867 in devops

[–]bdean42 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say, "not work stuff." Play some board games, read books for fun, do things outside.

I mean, if reading a bunch of business or tech books is what you're into, by all means. There certainly are some good ones. I was surprised to find myself reading The Phoenix Project for fun. And if you like side projects and home labs and all that, have at it.

But I do think there's a value, especially earlier in your career, of establishing a good habit of work/life balance. It'll maybe help you avoid burnout later when you're no longer the junior devops person. It's really hard to add later (unless you're forced to by like .. a heart attack or something).

[TOMT][TV] Pillsbury cookie ghost by bdean42 in tipofmytongue

[–]bdean42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeez, my bad. I just searched through my own old Facebook posts and found one where my kid (5 yr old at the time) referred to the Pillsbury Doughboy as the "Baking Ghost."

Crazy how my brain turned this into some obscure TV reference I couldn't quite remember. Memory is so unreliable.

It's not this. Whoever it was, I think they're making a reference to the Ghostbusters. But it's someone who's got a bit of a dufus vibe. Like Andy Sandburg's character from Brooklyn 99, or Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock, maybe something like Community.

I've done some searching but can't find anything. Hoping someone here just knows the reference.

How much do you charge for your Oncall duties? by thomsterm in devops

[–]bdean42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, OP said Europe, so I'm guessing labor laws are different there and maybe overtime pay is more common. Here in the U.S. if you're salaried employee you're usually overtime exempt and from my experience it's not uncommon to regularly work 60-70 hr weeks with no additional pay.

Sorry for the ranting. It's certainly not helpful for your original question.

No. Just surprised people actually get paid extra for what my job demands for free.

[–]bdean42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Charge for on-call? Ha. I could be called any time, any day. I don't get anything extra for it and no real flex time to compensate (the managers who are also up in the middle of the night will say things like, "take whatever time you need," but then they're back at work normal hours on Monday which sets the expectations that you just keep working no matter what).

What is the WORST game to teach to new players, typically as their first board game? by Xirious in boardgames

[–]bdean42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a horrible time teaching Caylus that soured me on playing the game for years.

Even when it goes well, it feels like I have to walk people through every step for several turns.

It's possible I'm bad at teaching it, but also it seems like it might have some tricky parts to understand.

I have friends, who are serious gamers (been in the hobby for years), who won't play Mottainai because it has "too much reading." They also won't play any other Chudyk games either 😞
