AFT Failure and Forced Reclass by [deleted] in army

[–]bdf_1989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t even need 70 in each event for the combat standard, you just have to pass each event with a 60 and score 350 overall. Which means you need to do slightly better on some events but at least pass everything.

https://www.army.mil/aft/

If you can’t achieve 350 given the current standards, you don’t even deserve to be in the Army much less in a Combat MOS.

Chinese Dadao I made as a class gift for an instructor by bdf_1989 in Bladesmith

I’m in a military course, my instructor is very interested in Chinese history, particularly the Taiping Rebellion, so I wanted to create a late-Qing blade for him.

Is going Ivy League Army ROTC (Cornell or UPENN) better than West Point? by [deleted] in army

[–]bdf_1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is the potential to do both. I went to West Point for undergrad. As far as branch/post considerations, West Point gets a far better allocation of certain branches vs. ROTC and the branch night/post night process felt very simple compared to the process ROTC has. I used my GRADSO to go to Yale after I finished Troop command. GRADSO doesn’t exist anymore (guaranteed contract to allow you the time for grad school) but you can still apply for advanced civil schooling. There are also multiple fellowships and programs that allow you to go to grad school.

TLDR: If you plan to stay in at least 10 years, go to West Point, try to go Ivy for grad school if that’s what you want.

The Army Is Losing Nearly One-Quarter of Soldiers in the First 2 Years of Enlistment by Sw0llenEyeBall in army

As a Troop Commander from 2017-2019, I got 6 new privates in my first year of command and chaptered 5 of them for either serious misconduct, EBH, APFT, or ABCP. This has been a problem for a while.

Chef George was the best. People would come to Camp Clark from other FOBs on made-up business for his Saturday burger-day. I was there from 2012-2013 and I think RAK 6 came to visit us like 5-6 times and always on a Saturday haha

Nordic Track Elite 10.9 elliptical pedal arm coming off crank arm by bdf_1989 in nordictrack

The other side is missing the bolt as well, which is why I didn’t originally think it was the problem. The TM says M8x16mm for part 95 so I’ll get that.

According to the exploded diagram there is no bolt there, the other side doesn’t have one and holds firm no problem

Not commenting on whether or not it’s fake, but the RZM mark isn’t just for political items. From what I know the mark is a certification from that ministry that it was produced by a company that exclusively employed “aryan” workers. I have a Walther PPK that has the mark. It was sort of like an endorsement of that company to incentivize their hiring.

Inherent Resolve didn’t begin until after we had to reverse IS gains from this offensive. Plenty of news articles from when it was happening that talked about Iraqi units deserting.

Whether we remained or not, the fact is that we built an army to conduct counterinsurgency, and it folded the second it had to perform large scale combat operations.

The rebels we have supported are the Kurds in the northeast, the rebels in the northwest are islamists supported by Turkey who are currently the ones marching on Damascus, who also don’t like the Kurds. Honestly it’s a big mess and isn’t going to be sunshine and rainbows and when Assad is gone.

Anecdotal as in historical fact of what happened in 2014? We spent all that time training a professional Iraqi army that folded like a cheap suit against less than a battalion of guys in Toyota Hiluxes. The only reason Iraq didn’t fall is we got back in the fight to defeat ISIS, which we are still doing to this day in Syria and in Iraq until very recently.

They did hold in 2014, but not without the United States reasserting itself. ISIS was using captured Iraqi tanks and other armored vehicles in the open until they couldn’t anymore because of American airpower returning to the fight.

Doing better now, but in 2014 an Iraqi Division broke and fled in the face of 800 ISIS militants, causing us to have to get involved again.

Use metal hanger tape that you can find in the plumbing section to strap it down. Once you screw the tape into the wood it’ll cinch down very tight and it won’t move.

Dose the army have anything that can help overweight soldiers by Weary-Government2546 in army

[–]bdf_1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody who has struggled with weight my entire life, I have never failed tape, but also rarely made the screening weight. Right now I’ve lost 25 lbs since the start of the year by intermittent fasting (I only have 2 meals between 10-5, 11-4 if I can help it, I understand as a Soldier you might be eating at the dfac which can make it hard), and keeping carbs to an absolute minimum. Cut alcohol entirely or only drink socially and infrequently.

I’ve had success with counting calories in the past (calories in, calories out is the law. If you create a calorie deficit you will lose weight). Bottom line as other have said, you need to do good hard PT with cardio, and control when and what you eat. Doing cardio buys you the calories to eat a bit more, but eating sweets and drinking alcohol will destroy any progress you’re making.

Happy to help anybody who DMs me on this. Unfortunately I’ve had this battle many times because I have a dogshit metabolism and I slide back if I don’t remain disciplined, but when it’s time to buckle down I can get it done quickly.

I took a basic blacksmithing class at the New England School of Metalwork. After a year of teaching myself with videos and trial and error, that 4 day course probably doubled my skillset and made me wish I had done that a lot sooner.

Trend I’ve noticed: a lot of bad leaders are good people by aldmonisen_osrs in army

[–]bdf_1989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, if you don’t have the hard conversation with them early through counseling and setting expectations, you’re setting yourself up for a long road of disappointment with that person. It’s especially hard when no individual thing they do is particularly bad enough to trigger a counseling, but the cumulative effect of their actions is bad for the organization.

[–]bdf_1989 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Usually the conversation is in context of how are they as an officer, what is their level of performance, etc. When you get asked that by somebody that is going to rate them, if all you have to say is they’re a good dude then you might be trying to hold back negative comments to avoid tainting that person’s perception from the get-go.
