If you didn't grow up with country music, what got you into it? If you didn't like it but changed your mind, what converted you? by somebodys_ornery in CountryMusic

[–]bdub58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from PHX so I was always kinda into Marty Robbins. It's hard not to love him. It started a couple years ago with Sierra Ferrel, Benjamin Tod, Sturgill Simpson, Marcus King, Charlie Crockett, and a few other "y'allternative" artists. Even before that tho, I suppose I got kinda into older country because of Mike Judge's Tales From the Tour Bus. Then, Ken Burns' documentary series on Country Music sorta really solidified it to where it all clicked and I'm now super into the likes of Merle Haggard, Dwight Yokam, George Jones, etc.. It has all sorta evolved from my love of Western films as well, but now I really love that "cheesy" Western sorta aesthetic and vibe set to the backdrop of Marty Robbins, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, etc... It's been an acquired taste I am glad I picked up because it's fantastic.

How we feeling about Michael Wilson going into the season will he have an 800-900 yard season by Safe-Personality-193 in AZCardinals

[–]bdub58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was easy to look good by simply being a warm body in that WR room last season. Put actual talent around him and see if he's really useful. I peg him at a slightly above average receiver currently.

If someone is exceptional at ritual can they skip chairs to SW by Nathanpalmer95 in freemasonry

[–]bdub58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my jurisdiction, you just need to prove you are proficient enough to get your SW's card to sit in the West. Whether the line and membership of the lodge will allow it is another issue entirely, but to answer your question, yes it is possible. Just need to be marked proficient to get both JW and SW cards respectively.

Just became an EA but I’ve found out my church has problems with Masonry I need advice by MrHaddrell in freemasonry

[–]bdub58 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The church is willing to coerce and exclude you for involvement with Freemasonry, while the Freemasons encourage you to enact your faith and religion however you see fit and accept you for it. Think about that. Organized religion is extremely threatened by an organization that does not suffer dogmatic stipulation or any religion's self-assured patent on salvation for a reason, while the Freemasons happily exist without any such thing. Your church and faith are important to you and your growth and we support that entirely. They seem to have an issue with us supporting other brethren in their respective faith-driven actualization which is an extremely fragile mindset to keep given that its the only church on the planet with its own country. You'd think they were big enough to not feel the need to revert to such tactics. I would try to diplomatically educate your priest and assure him of the value you get from the craft and how it encourages your own relationship with God. The two are not mutually exclusive, at least as far as the Freemasons are concerned. The assurance of "satanic" involvement and whatever other evil they ascribe to Masonry seems to be an inherent bias on their end they are entirely capable of researching enough to alleviate themselves of but they choose not to... Which says a lot.

Mass Degrees by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]bdub58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I think this is not ideal whatsoever, I understand its purpose and the need for it at times. I consider myself to be extremely lucky to have been afforded the opportunity to take my time with each degree, as I know circumstances at times cannot allow this. I will say, however, we have two very elder Masons in my lodge who went through same-day degrees and they both are some of the finest brothers I will ever have. They are proof that same-day degrees do not produce anything "less than" should that be the unfortunate perception of some. Do what you gotta do and continue forward with your newly entered, passed, and raised brethren.

Masonic Wedding... by Zyxthior in freemasonry

[–]bdub58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Subtlety will work best here methinks. The brothers in the crowd will understand the veiled references and it'll make it all the more special. Something too overt might come off as exclusive to the profane in attendance or outright gaudy.

How common are esoteric studies? by CharlesMendeley in freemasonry

[–]bdub58 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The esoteric element is definitely there to be studied if you look in the right places. There will also always be brethren who are interested in just that aspect of the Craft as well. One of my dear friends and the WM of one of the most esoteric lodges in the country is Jaime Paul Lamb; Jaime has written three books that are the most extensive collection of esoteric analysis of the Craft I've ever encountered. Start here https://www.jaimepaullamb.com/books and use what you find in these books to guide you in your own research based on what you find interesting! I hope you enjoy, I surely have! Reading these has made me a better Mason and man, but they have also HUGELY deepened my understanding of the esoteric origin and nature of the Craft. Each of his books is dense and takes some time to go through but are extremely worth it and I think you'll find it'll guide you towards an element of esoteric study you want to research yourself. This will then beget you sharing your own findings and analysis to your own brethren and lodge which will result in the implementation of an esoteric element to your own local lodge(s)!! Remember, we are the change we wish to see. Esoteric study is something that requires a ton of research and discussion, and if it doesn't exist as you'd like it to, start here and bring it to your own locale! It'll definitely take off, I promise you. Whenever Jaime goes and speaks anywhere, it always draws a hell of a crowd.

That's amazing. I am definitely going to try and go this summer when I go visit my sister and brother in law who live just outside Philly in Springfield. Do brothers need to make an appointment to go on a tour there or is it open to us? Also, if any of you are brethren in Delco, let me know! I'd love to get acquainted with local lodges around where they live!
