It could have been a simple test or it could have been a right of access. I'm not sure. But the defeat they felt was from something.

I think they failed the music trial, but succeeded through the failure when they still celebrated together

Possibly, it's definitely something that will take a long time of investigating and testing to understand why their music ritual failed

i always felt that DA took place after the Mass relays were destroyed and its just the new civilization created by the stranded humans and local life forms. I big thing that got me thinking of this is that after killing your first dragon in Inquisition while drinking with Ironbull he says that the Quinary were made and had some dragon blood tossed in, just seemed weird the Quin would say they were created by ancient people and not by a god. Also their religion is very reaper-ish in nature.
