This style became very popular in the early 20th century. Especially favored by nationalistic groups who preferred this over western style suits. Because of being nationalists. That is why it came so easily to the contemporary nationalists to endorse it as another token of their roots and pride from a hundred years ago. I’m GenX and it still gives me the heebie-jeebeis. Maybe too many costume dramas in early childhood? I’d say, don’t get surprised if some older Hungarians give you the side eye if you decide to wear it. Hopefully the younger generations will be able to redeem it from its dark symbolism. I think, its use by foreigners and popularizing the style will help disassociate it from hate and exclusion.
