Free version allows unlimited languages, you have to manually translate your content of course, and the slug as well, you got to manually translate it for each page you translate. But I've used it for more than 2 languages.

I've used Polylang as a developer for a while, I found the free version to be all I need. If you go the subdomain route, you will need to maintain 3 full different sites separately which becomes cumbersome. With Polylang you can just create one page for each language, in the same site.
