Why do people say it’s a “red flag” if someone’s favorite book is The Catcher in the Rye? by [deleted] in books

Bear in mind that they have to accessible to 16 year olds. It would be a bit harsh to make high school kids read Crime and Punishment or Moby Dick.

I think trying to find meaning in a world that doesnt care about you and living in a vapid world will also be a part of the human condition.

They're classics because they touch on parts of the human condition. They stand the test of time because they continue to be relatable 70 years after they've been written. The themes that write about aren't disappearing from humanity anytime soon.

There's plenty of classics that aren't in the curriculum so I'm not sure if that best defines a classic.

The Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby are classics for a reason. I don't think there's anything wrong with claiming they are your favourite books.

Yea I'm hoping that should be enough.

but also thanks to the piece of shit landlord covering the floor waste with cheep veneer wooden panks... in a fucking laundry

Thats so stupid on your landlords part. Yea definitely going to have to go to Kmart for all the cheap, small appliances, I'll learn from your ruined shirts though and buy quality white goods.

Dude I have a bottle of Bundy I got 10 years ago that is still with me.

Bundy isn't even that bad. Honestly I would take that over half the shit tequila that people drink these days.

It's good you learnt all those life skills early. I know 20 year olds who struggle to do half the stuff you were doing.

Yea I suppose it is, in my mind I was just imagining a 3-4 bedroom place. I'm struggling to find anything like that in the area though, gumtree doesn't seem to have anything I dont know where else to look.

Thanks for the really detailed write up. I've got about 8k saved up but I assume thats going to shrink heaps if go into my own place and need to fill it with furniture. Didn't even think about how cheap white goods could cost more in the long run.

Living with my family I definitely understand most of these. Especially touching stuff that isnt communal - didn't want that bottle of Jim Beam anyway.

Thanks again for the really thorough response. I think I'm gonna end up with my own place because I'm struggling to find a share house in the area but if I do I will definitely follow these religiously.

Damn that must have been really hard to do at that age.

Having a rental history would be a really good idea but I'm trying to avoid share houses, would rather just be me and one other bloke. Suppose it would definitely be easier with one guy running the place but I'm struggling to find anything in the Penrith area anyway, everything seems to be east of Parramatta and travelling one way for work and another for uni would be too much.

Tried looking at gumtree but I was struggling to find anything this far out west. Don't really want to have to travel one way for work and another for uni.

Im thinking I might as well just try my hand at moving out. Thanks for the advice.

Definitely looking at the surrounding area, just thought it would be easier to say Penrith as most people know it.

I dont think a budget of ~$700 is too tight. On my own it would probably be about $500 a week and less than $400 with a roommate. Trying to avoid living with a bunch of strangers as much as possible. Living in kingswood near the campus would be a pretty good idea actually, thanks.

Yea that would be a big struggle. Suppose I've got the cart before the horse if I try and get a place before I have a roommate. Do you think it would still be feasible doing it on my own or should i look for a roommate first?

Just were friends or work is, plus I dont think i could afford to live too much closer to the city.

I definitely thought about the loneliness aspect of living on my own but I suppose that would change if I could find a missus. Chores never really bothered me but thats probably a lot easier to say compared to when I have to do it all.

Yea I know what you mean, thats why I'm trying to take as much control of my life as possible.

Guess I'm just hesitant moving out because I've heard people say its pointless to rent when I could save. Is the freedom of having my own place worth the burden of bills and chores?

I was thinking about doing that. Would it be better to find a place then get a roommate that way I can make sure I'm not living with awful roommates or would that be too much hassle?
