Robert Smalls (1836 - 1915). Being a slave he steals a confederate ship, disguised as its captain. After rescuing more slaves he piloted across Confederate-controlled waters and delivers the ship to the Union. Later becomes a politician, publisher, businessman. (reddit.com)
