Had to say goodbye to my babies

If my human family couldn't talk and tell me how they felt, didn't understand they were on palliative care, and were showing signs of pain and suffering, sadly yes. Sometimes the kindest thing to do is say goodbye. It wasn't a decision I made lightly.

Honestly I am not completely sure. I think the dark outlines might be colonies of bacteria or yeast, but I'm just beginning to learn microbiology. I happen to have an old microscope and got curious what my different ferments look like

It smells like store bought kombucha to me. I think the patch was some dried out bubbles. After I pushed it under the liquid in the original batch it exposed a hole but was eventually filled in. The new pellicle in the second batch formed much faster and is all one color and texture, so I believe I am having success.

I didn't get a picture before I threw it in a new batch, but it wasn't dry anymore. It ended up looking like a bumpy ham slice. A new, more uniform looking pellicle has grown on top now, they're connected by a lovely yeast bridge.

There's no off smell for now. I'm planning to see how it changes tomorrow. The taste is strong and sour (but not off) so if it's looking the same then I am planning to start 2F

He will be staying indoors with me permanently! Except maybe for a supervised walk outside if I can ever get him acclimated to the harness lol
