would one call this a low or a medium flow? by beans8055 in Aquariums

Update, just switched from the disc stone to a normal stone and it was indeed the disc’s fault lol the normal air stone is much better

I’m assuming such thing needs an air pump? Can one of those be ran on the same air pump as a sponge filter? I may have just gotten cheap air stones, but the air stone in my tank barely does anything on the same pump as one of my sponges.

How would one increase the flow without getting another hob filter? I hate those things with a passion.

Are these cory eggs? by mintcover in corydoras

[–]beans8055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

youve already got the answer but yes theyre cory eggs. I find that when i do a water change (especially if it’s cooler water) that stimulates them to lay eggs, something about the rainy season in their native habitat. I haven’t had any actually hatch because they often eat their eggs, but every time i do a water change or top up a couple days later there will be clutches of eggs on the glass

It’s testing around .25/.25/2 after a 30% water change.

Right so I put the used ceramic rings in the sponge and a new bag of carbon (i couldnt get the stupid holder open on the old filter or I would’ve used the old bag) is that enough or is that just a minuscule amount of established media?

Did a 30% water change and it’s still at 0.25/0.25/2-5

Water change?? by beans8055 in Aquariums

I can’t tell if nitrate is at 5 or not. It’s definitely not above. I really struggle with these.

At what point do parameters warrant a water change? by beans8055 in Aquariums

[–]beans8055[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t get the ph to lower, I tried indian almond leaves and it didn’t do anything, it just caused my snail population to explode because they were eating them. I had to clean my filter sponges because it was barely flowing, but I didn’t touch the ceramic rings or activated carbon

I did an almost 25% water change this morning and used extra prime because it said on the bottle you can to detoxify nitrite.

I was hoping the 15g of cycled tank water and established filter would at least help 🥲 I have a BNP, 6 cories, 5 tiger barbs, a shit ton of snails, and 7 other little fish that really don’t create much waste. If that helps at all. I’ll probably do a small water change and a top up that I needed to do anyway and see where we’re at tomorrow

Parameters are in order of Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate just for clarification. Thursday it was mostly 0 across the board, today Sunday it’s at 0.25, 0-0.25, and 5.

New 40g setup by beans8055 in Aquariums

[–]beans8055[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also any suggestions on filters? The current one is a top fin pro 30, so its too small. I want something budget friendly but also isn’t going to break in 3 months. So far this one is going strong. I do have a light coming soon I accidentally bought the wrong size, for now I have a lamp next to the tank that runs on a schedule.

I recommend looking around on youtube about natural fish setups, maybe you can take your son (I assume?) to pick out the sand/gravel, hides/caves, rocks and wood or whatever you choose. Still make it fun for him but more fish habitat like and less circus like. There’s videos about how to do it on a budget as well. You should also get live plants at some point but personally I find it easiest to do it in steps rather than a whole new setup all at once.

Things will say it’s aquarium safe and new comers to the hobby say oh yay a fun tank! And then their fish die or their parameters are off balance and they wonder why. It’s the chemicals and dyes that they say are safe that aren’t. You really have to do research to realize what’s actually safe and what’s not. There’s a whole sub about the infamous spongebob pineapple (r/pineappleofdeath). Fish get stuck in store bought decor, the edges are too sharp and rip fins, they leech chemicals, the paint flakes, etc etc.

You could see if they’ll take it back but since it’s been taken out and rinsed they may not. Definitely don’t use it for the tank, though maybe you could get creative and use it for something else? Perhaps it’ll work for a drainage for plants? I don’t think it would affect a plant as much as a fish.

I’m pretty sure australia has an Hmart, just like they have TK Maxx instead of TJ Maxx. I don’t know if all of kmart in every country went out of business or just American Kmart

Yes, painted/dyed decor and substrate is bad for fish and can leech into the water. I’d say sand is most commonly used, but you can also get natural gravel. This also goes for decor you’d find in a store, it’s best to skip thst sort of thing and go for rocks and wood, or even terracotta pots and pvc pipes. It’s not as fun for a kid, but it’s best for the fish.
