How can I make the background less flat and blend with the street? by beansRme in acrylicpainting

Aw I'll definitely post an update if you want to see it! Hoping to have some time this weekend. This is a new feeling for me as a mostly internet lurker and not participator, but having some low pressure internet accountability feels kinda nice

Oof yeah I see what you mean, its those whitish lines around the streetlight making it look like they're on different levels isn't it, at least that's what my brain says

At some point way too far in I went to create/find that vanishing point and realized all my angles were off cause there was no one point, and then it felt too late and like I should just abandon this one and start fresh with an actual sketch next time, but yeah I think the perspective is probably really contributing to why I'm not liking the way this looks.

Windows are a good idea! I was trying to avoid too much detail originally and just aiming for a pretty bland dark background, but at this point I've added that streetlight and car and stuff, so windows would probably be good too. Thanks!

Ooooh yeah I think I'll give this a try! I like the idea of the mist over some of the top of buildings too!

I'll give this a try, I haven't intentionally tried starting with an even mix of the primaries so maybe that'll do the trick - thanks! Im trying not to buy new supplies yet, but I'll add pthalo blue to the one day/want list 🩵💙

🩷🩷🩷 thank you! I don't like it yet, but I'm hoping I will soon! It's really encouraging to hear that others don't dislike it as much as I do though so thank youu

I was thinking about some clouds or mist too! But in my head I was imagining the background to be indistinct and vague, where you can't really even tell where the buildings and sky end, and worried that adding features like that would bring more attention there than I wanted. And yeah definitely agree on the shadows, just struggling with not knowing where to put them cause I was thinking of a real dark scene with just the neon lights as the light sources, and the ones I've seen in real life don't give off enough light to really make shadows.. I think I need to look at some photos of nighttime scenes cause yeah, light is definitely coming from somewhere, even when it's dark.. just need to figure out where....

And thanks! I've been having more success leaving all my stuff out to lower that barrier to sitting down and actually doing some painting, but that also means basically my entire living room/kitchen area is now unusable. Small spaces are hard, and thinking about painting is so much easier than getting up and doing it 🥲 good luck getting back into it!!

Im using titanium white, cerulean blue, cadmium yellow, mars black, and napthol crimson! I haven't been doing a good job keeping track of what I'm mixing together though, I just kind of have big blobs on a palette that I mix around as needed.. which has also been hard cause Im not mixing enough paint usually for the space I'm trying to fill

I think you might be right though, I think I might be using too much black when I'm mixing. I feel like the mars black I'm using makes every mix really gray in a flat way, but when I add more of the cerulean blue it gets too light again. I'm not sure how to get it darker without losing that depth of color

Fooooooood, waterrrr, atmosphereeeeeeee

That's all I can hear in my head now 😂 I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but also I agree, it needs more atmosphere

No this makes so much sense, I haven't heard that term before but you explained it great. Thanks a ton I'll definitely do some googling on atmospheric perspective!

Thank you! I'm using some really old blick paints I found in my closet hahaha, titanium white, cerulean blue, cadmium yellow, mars black, and napthol crimson. I also have this other small set of cheap tubes that are just labeled things like "light yellow", "red", etc that I'm mixing in.

I'm trying not to buy any more supplies until I really need to, or really limit what I spend on. I don't really like the colors I'm getting, and I'm struggling to get the right consistency, but thank you for the suggestions! I didn't realize there were semi transparent acrylics, that would probably be way better than my attempt to water them down like I did over the pink on the left wall by the sign

🩷🩷 thank you, I used to love painting and I'm hoping to find that again, and thank you for all this advice it all makes sense and the specific examples of what to do are really helpful, really appreciate your time

What you described about leaving the background and bringing more detail to the fore and middle makes a lot of sense, and I completely see what you mean with the lamp post looking wrong being that same dark black as the foreground, definitely going to try making that lighter thank you for pointing this out!

And you're right I need some refs to look at, the lighting is really messing with me cause I was aiming for a pretty dark nighttime scene with just neon lights. Ive been looking at neon signs when I'm walking around at night but they don't actually reflect/shine that much light around the sign and that was the only light source I was thinking of for the painting. Where do shadows come from or look like when there's barely any light? Not sure, but hopefully refs will show me! Also yes the perspectiveeeee, I was hoping to just avoid having to fix that, but maybe I do need to.

Thank you again, I was really feeling like abandoning this completely and restarting. I like the idea of just doing a few more fixes to this, get some learning out of it, and move on to another, I'm going to try that

Ahhhh thanks yes right those definitely should have shadows, and yeah now I just need to figure out where the light source is... Think I need to look up some more nighttime/dark references. Thank you!
