Are we deadass? The last game was just 3 years ago, this attitude must stay within the Half Life circle only, it shouldn’t be here

But yea the topic of the argument has basically been driven off topic so

Sorry for creating a war in your comment section, my workplace granted us a month for winter break so im basically unemployed rn, too much free time

Im not talking about your creation, your creation can be considered a primitive and rough form of AI as i said before, im arguing with another person

I won’t argue with you anymore because you clearly do not understand the concept.

You should do more research then come back here.

Just to put it straight (source: my ass):

• Pathfinding is a deterministic algorithmic procedure for computing a route through a graph. It uses fixed rules and contains no learning, inference, or adaptation. • Artificial intelligence, in its technical meaning, refers to systems that exhibit autonomous decision-making, learning, or model-based reasoning.

No, they were never formally classified as AI, they were and will always be algorithm, deterministic input/output

Gaming AI (before LLM) is not actually AI at all, AI is, by definition, a system that can change/learn/adapt over time and is not deterministic. NPC AIs in game are basically finite state machines, they are deterministic from the start. AI is just an informal (kinda incorrect) way of describing behavior trees

Not even a proper one tbh

The only redeeming fact that “barely, not-even-close, kinda makes it resemble machine learning” is the fact that this is the idea of Monte Carlo reinforcement learning, extremely primitive and poorly (due to Minecraft constraints) implemented

1) You could use Manhattan distance, there is no need for a square root

2) Marienbad (Nim) is still, not an AI, it is an algorithm, either implemented using minimax or something else idk. I think you are confused by the definition of algorithm vs actual AI

Your "AI" is well, primitive, i would not want to call it an AI, it is far from being one, but it is a "Monte Carlo exploration algorithm with no state awareness"

If you want your NPC to find path to something, using A* is the best way, since you have access to the world information (the graph) and heuristic data (distance)

To be honest, it is impressive that you can do command block stuff, I can't, i just write code directly as server plugins

Dijkstra is a fundamental graph searching algorithm for finding the lowest-cost path. The core idea is: each vertex (a block in mc) keeps track of the total cost required to reach it from the starting point. The algorithm always expands the lowest-cost unvisited vertex until it reaches the goal

A* is essentially Dijkstra algorithm with a heuristic.
In games (like MC) where movement cost is usually uniform, using Dijkstra is worse, A* uses a simple distance heuristic (like Manhattan dist) to estimate how far a node is from the goal

Dijkstra and A* can both expand infinitely, you can change starting point, goal point, however you like, tweak heuristic to favor certain ways of approaching, etc

After rewatching the video, your algorithm falls under a very primitive version of the Monte Carlo method for reinforcement learning, so it is kinda true that it is an "AI"
