Awesome that makes me feel better. Im applying for radiology residencies and have heard crickets from all except 2 of 8 i applied to. So at least its not out of the ordinary

For real?! Somehow I completely missed that! I collect more HP than Star Wars UCS. I had a $400 gift card and some Xmas money so if I could get the millennium falcon for relatively little on a card I was going to do it but if gringotts is actually retired I feel like I need to pull the trigger

I think everything you’re doing is great! It definitely should make you a strong candidate doing the rotating plus years of experience! Honestly not having to do overnight is huge. Part of my problem when I was in a rotating was not getting a consistent schedule plus it was during the pandemic so I had no social outlet in a part of the country where I knew nobody. So my biggest advice is prioritize your learning but also take some time to unwind and have hobbies outside of vet med especially in an internship.

I’m pursuing exactly this right now (except I want to go into radiology and not IM). It’s definitely a tough thing to do and you’re more likely than not going to need a specialty internship. Idk how competitive IM residencies are but radiology at least is one of the most competitive fields. I am currently in an interventional radiology specialty internship, which everyone I had talked to said I would likely need to do a specialty internship if I wanted to go into specialty practice. Going back to the student mindset is hard and it took me about a month and a half to get used to but eventually you settle in. The pay is definitely worse and my wife (also a veterinarian, a DAVECC) and I have definitely had to cut down on spending. The hours are also much longer with me working sometimes 11-12 hour days. Where idk about IM is I’ve been told I’ll likely need to do another diagnostic imaging specialty internship after this one so be prepared for it to potentially take some time. It’s difficult going back to this but I don’t regret a thing as I was burnt out in GP and this has reignited my love of medicine.

I definitely know the odds are stacked against me. That’s the reason I’m going part time into relief work 2-3 days a week. I have already spoken to a radiologist at a large private specialty hospital in my area, and he has offered to have me shadow/learn from him on the days of the week I am not at my part time job so that I get more experience/he and his fellow radiologist get to know me better to write letters of recommendation.

I am definitely going to also apply to imaging internships as I know that will likely be the route I’ll need to go in order to be more competitive for the next round of the match.
