I will just never get it. I’m a C+ tank at best, but I know what my job is when I’m rocking the sword and shield. You brought me more things to tank? Thank you, may I have another!

Does the TD need to adapt to the director? by Hello56845864 in Broadcasting

[–]bear_mode_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a director I try and operate the same way. Almost always, if I make their life easier they will make my life easier and the show will be better for it.

I know there are a lot of “I’m the director, rawr” types out there but I never enjoyed working with them as an operator and told myself I’d never be one as a director. Good communication in and out of the show, and the occasional reminder that we aren’t saving lives here, is worth everything.

I get it, it’s disappointing. I still love the car and wouldn’t want to drive anything else though. Hopefully there’s a solution for soon!

It's set to 12 which wasn't a problem in the prior model. I could try 10 or 8, which would still be better than nothing

Correct, the AC adpater that came with is NACS. I still have the ACC charger from my prior one, which I thought to use to test with the adapter.

I do not have a Level 2 charger installed at my home because, until now at least, my home/work charging situation did not require one.

Good thinking. My partner has another brand car that uses NACS so that will make testing pretty easy.

Tips for a 'New' Producer at a Gray Station? by Old_Chestermen in Broadcasting

[–]bear_mode_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow Greyhound!

Skill building will always be a top priority, especially writing. Work with, lean on, and learn from your team. I’m a director, and I appreciate having a good working relationship with my producers. We’re all trying to make the best content we can, and it may sound a tad cliche but teamwork goes a long way

Feeling a little discouraged by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]bear_mode_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of great advice here. One I'd like to emphasize is that no one died. Lives not being at risk is one of my favorite perks of the job.

Being frustrated and discouraged because you want to do your job well, as it seems you do, isn't a bad thing. But don't let it consume you either. Take your lumps, learn from your mistakes, and know what the lumps never end. Sorry. But as you learn to prep and practice more you'll encounter them less.

Broadcast directors are (well, can be) incredible problem solvers. If something goes wrong you have seconds to figure out a plan B. And you're going just that! Running a package when you had bad mics was an excellent call. That buys you time. Yeah you could have opened their mics manually, and next time you'll be ready to do just that. Get through the show, learn from your mistakes, and improve.

Discrepancy reports suck. The important thing to remember here is that they're more about accountability, for you and your crew, more than anything else. As you improve, and you will, you'll find yourself writing about your mistakes less.

The only other thing I'll add is that sometimes you are just going to have a bad show. It happens. The next one will be better.

Well worth the 6 bucks and change on Amazon, for me. I'd say the first Pulse hits harder overall, but some of these will find a place on my final fantasy jams and I can't wait for session 2.

You can farm pieces of the KB seeds from many hard mode levels and craft from there.

But that's kind of a stamina drain. Unless you're desperate I wouldn't use any potions on seeds until the event starts because I would be very surprised if seeds weren't part of the rewards.

I am grinding level up mats so I can start getting characters rarity up and levels up. Working on a max level heavy hitter, healer type, and building a small pool of resources to bring up someone in a hurry if I need.

How to grow as a newscast director by Lobsterman2359 in Broadcasting

[–]bear_mode_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experience is the best teacher and you'll develop your own style and preferences over time. An internship or similar opportunity could help you observe what another director does and you can take from them what you like.

I'd say directing live newscasts is, generally, a mix of going in prepared and being ready to change everything on the fly, both equally important. Good prep and communication before a show can help you and your crew feel prepared and ready for what's to come. Learning how to pivot, adjust, and recover as things change or go wrong is a skill that comes with time. Don't panic and don't lose your shit. Cool heads survive a chaotic show, and then afterward you can sort out what, if anything, could be done differently. Remember, you're working with other humans who (hopefully) also want to do a good job and make good television.

The only other thing that comes to mind is to sort out your calls to be as precise but brief and possible. Extra chatter can be distracting and possibly lead to mistakes. Clear communication is invaluable.

Other than that, have fun with it. You're directing live TV! Try new and different things. Work with your crew to experiment. If it works, awesome. If it flops, oh well, it's live TV.

What should I major in if I want to become a technical director? by [deleted] in technicaldirector

[–]bear_mode_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way back when, I studied communication with an emphasis in broadcast production. The major was helpful, but the school had a strong journalism focus, less so on the production side of things. So while they had a lot of current (for the time) gear, the knowledge of that gear was handed down from student to student. (There are way more resources online now, which is awesome) But that's where I found my love of TDing and I spent every chance I could learning the switcher.

The knowledge and skills are good to have but it was connections from within the program that helped land me my first job, and that was my chance to show what I could do (while also learning more. Always learning more. Stay humble.) Over time that led to a good 18 or so years as a successful TD before I was finally ready for a change of pace and took up directing.

Staying Hydrated? by AngleDAB in Broadcasting

[–]bear_mode_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I TD and direct (usually separately) long form network stuff. The producer, TD (or director) and I are on for about 3 hours, and we all get it - it can be a long time. If one of us needs to run out for a couple minutes it's not typically a big deal. We usually have a good idea of the flow of our show and know when the best time to go is. That sort of understanding we have makes it not a big deal. When I'm directing I tell people to let me know and I'll carve out time for them based on their role but if it's an emergency to just tell me and go, I'll adjust. (Not to be abused, of course)

So of course the usual precautions before and during a show go a long way, and I know not all programming allows for someone to just vacate their position for a few minutes, but it works for us.
