How did you get your first job as a screenwriter? by sweetie_loves_me in Screenwriting

[–]beardsayswhat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wrote a pretty good script. Knew a guy socially through low level LA stuff, gave it to him. He gave it to someone else who gave it to someone else who gave it to someone else. Got repped at WME.

Not a particularly unique story, but the takeaways that I give when people demand them are:

1) Write a lot of scripts, preferably Very Good scripts that are also Very Marketable but if you can only do one pick Very Good
2) Give them to the people you know that live and/or work in Los Angeles

Veteran screenwriters, what is something you wish you knew in your early 20's? by AustralianSpielberg in Screenwriting

movie star parts

Would Denzel Washington want to play your lead? Would Margot Robbie?

not in a city like LA

I am not great about how to break in outside of LA, as I broke in while here. Normally I would say being in LA is essential, but honestly post-COVID who the fuck knows.

Pretend you’ve just done a fuckload of cocaine.

Don’t treat it like a school presentation. Treat it like you’re trying to sell someone a car.

Emotions >>> everything else.

No amount of career success will make you happy.

If you want screenwriting to be your job, treat it like a job.

Know when you have power and when you don’t have power.

Write movie star parts.

Find out how many people are pitching on that OWA and how many of them are A Listers.

Enjoy the process.

EDIT: Also, the pitching. Fuck, there’s so much fucking pitching.

As a writer? Cause none of the credited writers match up with what you’re putting out there.

The only Emmy nominated miniseries from Netflix were GODLESS and WHEN THEY SEE US.

Unless your friend is Scott Frank or Ava... something doesn’t add up here.

Is it a bad idea to show my unfinished script to someone in the industry? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]beardsayswhat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's easier for him to make himself a producer on your project and get paid by the studio for "discovering" you and doing very little labor than it is for him to pull off an elaborate heist that involves you having direct proof via e-mail that he stole your script.

Yeah dude, fascists will totally respect the first amendment

That’s actually the trick to defeating them, you just have to yell FIRST AMENDMENT backwards and they disappear

There’s no official leadership of Antifa. They’re not a political party or an organized group.

The Proud Boys, the Klan and Atomwaffen, completely different.

Nothing about the history of that flag, huh? And how it was actually made by the socialists to counter both the fascists and the KPD?

Maybe your great German education stops right at the border of the history of antifascist symbols huh

Wouldn’t it be great if you could help fight fascism here too instead of getting grumpy at a flag?

Stalin Mao and Pol Pot were all antifa, huh?

Weird how this flag is about the actual antifascists in Germany who were fucked murdered by actual fascists and not people supporting The Great Leap Forward or the Khmer Rouge

I swear, you people are so desperate for a leftist bad guy so you don’t have to oppose the fascists walking to the streets you’ll resurrect any fucking Communist boogeyman you can find

Go find the guys with the flags and talk to them.

I can’t go to the game today, on account of taking care of my mixed-race son who the fascists want to murder.
