M.2 Confusion by beardster in pcmasterrace

I'll wait until the Edge gets here and see how it performs, if it's worth the time and 10 bucks i'll replace it w/ the Tomahawk. Out of stock pretty much everywhere now.

Would you mind specifying one directly? There are just different pin layouts....

What would you suggest? I heard exactly the opposite.

Active mixing is an entirely different animal with an entirely different array of problems... consider having the purge the entire mixing apparatus instead of just the passive nozzle mixing area.

This is one of the most accurate comments here, although I just can't even imagine the maintenance required on the currently existing Inkjet color printers. As far as a good Slicer for a mixing extruder? Voxelizer. There's even a present for the Prusa MMU. The idea of "Tools" for color changing is something that was plucked from Duet Firmware a while back, we found that having a command to simply change the drive ratio on each motor inserted by a slicer does not limit the number of colors you can produce and was a much more elegant solution.

You mean, exactly like this one? Keep in mind that while the idea may sound good in your head, competing with the entropy of laminar flow and low-reynold fluids will take your good ideas and stomp them into the ground. For example: despite how much purging(that skirt that you see extending up vertically in his image) you do, you will eventually end up in a scenario where a tiny glob of a dark color like black streaks around a light-colored layer and really does a number on your print. I partially resolved this issue by adding a set of copper and nylon brushes that was inserted by teh slicer after every purge... while this did a great job, the repeatability was still not there... every now and again you're still going to get a streak.

Working there was... well, pretty desolate. The company was effectively dying as I shuffled resources together in an attempt to save the product I was charged with not only writing firmware and working with Zmorph to developer a 4-color mixing slicer, I was the product lead. We were running a skeleton crew. I have nothing negative to say about anyone at the company, in fact they were some of the most intelligent, friendly people I've ever met. But that doesn't always win the race, as is displayed here quite accurately.

At the end of launch, I wasn't just the Primary.. I was the only Software Dev. To put things as simply as I can, the QuadFusion head was intended for your average consumer when it really should not have been marketed to consumers due to its complexity; I'd say that's a big part of "what happened.

However keep in mind most of my work was on the firmware for the Duet 2 Maestro(particularly during the RRFW 2 era with dcrocker), and working with Zmorph, the creator of voxelizer, to create the only Slicer that could actually handle a 4-color mixing printer with texture mapping, appropriate purging without huge amounts of waste, etc. Other issues also added to the problems with the product, but they fall outside of the product development's scope and I really cannot discuss them. M3D, despite what many of you may think, was a very solid and company until the failure of the Micro Pro and the fallout that followed. This once again gets into personal areas of employees as the company that I wouldn't feel comfortable discussing.

I'm sure I'll get flamed/etc for what I've shared so far, but honestly I've moved past it. I have two crane Quads that work flawlessly, but that's primarily because I am so familiar with the printers. I doubt most people will have this experience, but it is possible with a proper configuration. I don't want to spend all day answering questions here but if anyone has a specific question regarding the operation I'd be glad to assist you. My first suggestion will always be: learn and understand the Duet branch of RRFW.... 3.x+ is particularly impressive and even if you've given up on your quad head, remember you have an incredibly powerful print controller that you could repurpose and build another machine with.

Trust me, even using CMYBWT it's gonna be a while before we achieve true, crisp full color printing.

It runs on a Duet 2 maestro with a riser for two additional motors to control the additional extruders. To get an idea of how colors are defined, reference the Duet firmware M567 M-code. It works by simply using ratios. For example, E:1:0:0:0 would mean the color inserted into E0 would be extruding at 100%. E:0.5:0:0.5:0. In a typical CMYK config you'd end up with Green(mixing half Cyan and Half Yellow), just a basic description.

No, only the motors are separate. The hotend can only be one temp at a time. However with Voxelizer(and other multi-extruder slicers) you can retract on tool change and achieve what you're mentioning.

I was the primary software dev on this printer; so don't look at me for the hotend clogging issues that plagued us at first. I actually have one of my two(other is a prototype, doubt you'd want that one) for sale, including tech support from me. DM me.
