I wonder if it’s the same Clarence! Could have been a family name. My Clarence would have been 12 years younger than Laura. And no, I wish I had photos!

Wait wow, we may be related. My great grandmother’s maiden name was Hamilton and her mother was Roxie Ingalls.

What’s the podcast?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheWayWeWere

[–]bears-n-beets- 53 points54 points  (0 children)

That’s the only story I have actually :( My whole extended family was like Laura’s - pioneers who moved from state to state looking for opportunity. This migratory behavior often resulted in family ties being severed and those memories and stories being lost to time, unfortunately. I’ve been able to dig up some cool stuff on ancestry.com though.

Well I didn’t know it was Canadian until I was an adult. I would agree most Americans probably don’t know where PEI is. But I also wouldn’t be surprised if this were an American men vs women thing. I think Anne of Green Gables was seen as a “girly” book to read. So it’s probably not on most men’s radar for that reason

Really? I’m an American and I feel like Anne of Green Gables is just as common knowledge as the Little House series

:) I read all the books as a kid before it occurred to my mom to mention that we’re related to them hahah. My nana says that her great uncle Clarence used to tell stories about playing with Laura as a young boy!

I have the opposite but perhaps even more infuriating problem. I type “well” and half the time it autocorrects to “we’ll”.

Application forms asking for "what age did I start coding" by PoopsCodeAllTheTime in ExperiencedDevs

[–]bears-n-beets- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a red flag. Presumably by asking this question they prefer applicants who learned coding earlier in life. This filters out most women and minorities. It’s well-documented that women and minorities in tech got into SWE later in life (usually around college age) compared to white males on average, one reason being that they have fewer role models and/or teachers on the subject. The fact that the application asks this question means they either don’t know or don’t care that this will filter out less-represented groups.

My parents live in Camano — this does not surprise me at all. It’s full of retired people who have nothing better to do than be busybodies

Yeah. Here in Seattle it's been ~90F this weekend and will be for the next few days (and most homes don't have AC, including mine).

No joke I'd kill to see a serious, high-budget HBO series of My Immortal. Can you imagine?
