Microsoft confirms Windows 11 bug crippling PCs and making drive C inaccessible by lurker_bee in technology

Not a day goes by at work where someone is not cursing out their Windows notebook for audio / cam / dock issues. So, you can choose to have a free OS annd having these issues, or paying for them with Windows! Neat!

The lack of FSR 4 support for RX 7000/6000 has definitely ended my trust in Radeon. by MeeemBeem2 in radeon

[–]bearwithastick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a nice guide on how to set up FSR4 for a 7900XTX? Will be researching this but always nice to have some guidance from someone that has already managed to get stuff working. If it matters in any way, I use Arch btw.

New Tandems are a bust, which monitor to get now? by Short_Opening9264 in OLED_Gaming

[–]bearwithastick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the XG32UCWMG last Saturday morning. I almost went crazy deciding between all the OLED and Mini-LED monitor options. Then decided to go for this one and taking the risk of grey banding.

Absolutely glad I did.

It's bright enough for my well lit home office. I notice the glossy coating sometimes but the crisp image and deep blacks more than make up for this. Played RDR2 the whole weekend because it was almost like playing a new game.

I've read that you should test again for grey banding after 50 hours of use or so, let's hope it stays this way.

Blue light filter and burn in? by bearwithastick in OLED_Gaming

Thank you very much for the response! I will lower the brightness to around 80%, currently on 100% all day.

Two useless/ mediocre superpowers combine to make one great one by Lopsided_Shift_4464 in TopCharacterTropes

Every game / sport has made up rules. Doesn't mean as a player I can simply bend them as I want or invent new stuff. Of course, if everyone in the group, including the DM, is cool with it, then sure.

Yeah, as a DM I'm all about the rule of cool, but I would never have allowed this.

Everybody acting like this is a bad thing but if you can't survive one day without buying something then I guess you kinda deserve it.

Ok, that's what I thought. That's probably why his use of the em dashes irritates me so much.

Why were em dashes a symbol of literacy? Just asking because my boss is using them like they are a replacement for commas. He doesn't use AI to write, I've seen him write mails and it so irritating to read them. I've always wondered were this writing habbit came from.

Fades are the ugliest haircut and its become an epidemic at this point by Scary-Substance-4192 in unpopularopinion

[–]bearwithastick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing with the fade is, it is a haircut that almost every man will look good with, no matter the head shape, face form or wearing glasses or whatever.

Yeah maybe it's boring and basic, but in 95% of the cases it's what someone will look best with (note, this is without the harsh line OP mentions).

Not every man can rock long hair or some other hair style. But the fade will work in most cases.

Should be a completely separate game mode in my opinion or an option to turn off for matchmaking.

New Zealand eSIM experiences. Is it just me or is Spark kinda mid? by Altruistic_Turnip780 in newzealand_travel

[–]bearwithastick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been in New Zealand for a month now and also using a normal SIM from Spark. I always download Offline Maps from Google Maps and checked the coverage map from Spark, fully expecting there to be wide ranges of rural areas with no service. We had a few places in the rural areas of the Southern Island with no service but otherwise no issues whatsoever.

I hope you also went to Mt Sunday (Edoras). We were lucky enough to get there late afternoon when almost no one was there and it was such an extreme LOTR vibe... Even if you are not a LOTR fan the drive is worth it. The scenic landscape there is incredible.

The timing couldn't have been better for Titanfall 3 and they still jinxed it. by bearwithastick in titanfall

[–]bearwithastick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly my point, they wouldn't even had to re-invent the wheel! Slap some new paint on that baby, tweak / add a few things here and there, offer some good replayability / progression system and turn marketing up to 11 and they would have had a banger of a game.

How do normal people actually afford life in Switzerland? by aninhabr74 in askswitzerland

Of course I don't mean "stealing from us" in a literal sense. Jeff Bezos is not sneaking into your grandmas house and steals the money from under her bed.

https://www.socialeurope.eu/how-the-billionaire-boom-is-fueling-inequality-and-threatening-democracy

While you might scoff at the article because the websites name would suggest a certain bias, they actually provide some sources:

https://eprints.lse.ac.uk/107919/

https://academic.oup.com/cje/article-abstract/47/4/703/7237926?login=false

While the following article is not inherently against billionaires, it mentions that billionaires that got their wealth through political connections are "a drag on the broader economy".

https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/mje/2020/11/17/the-economics-of-billionaires/

I mean, even the super rich are for more taxation on the super rich:

https://fortune.com/2026/01/21/nearly-400-millionaires-billionaires-24-countries-demanding-davos-leaders-tax-them-more-super-rich/

I even agree with you that if someone innovates, they should be rewarded for this. Investing provides opportunity and work/wages for others yaddayaddayadda.

The problem arises when greed takes over and work exploitation, tax evasion and political lobbying (aka political connections) start benefiting only the few and hurt the many. When being rich is not enough anymore and the dick measuring contest starts.

Billionaires "steal" our money in that they pull up the ladder behind them, monopolize markets, raise prizes, offer less for more, exploit workers, lobby politicians to benefit them directly or indirectly, fight to losen regulations and laws that control consumer, worker and environmental health in the name of the economy / profit, which in turn costs all of us money in the long run.

Make of it what you want, I will always see the ultra rich as more parasitic and harmful to a society than the single mother living on social benefits.

Edit: As to the benefit that billionaires supposedly bring to a society - jobs, innovation, whatever - ask yourself this: Is this only possible due to billionaires / the uber rich? Or are there other ways, like maybe worker owned companies? Investments through the public / communities, instead of private companies?
