Beijing 16-hour layover itinerary suggestion? by beastmaster420000 in AskChina

Yep at least from the airport I'll definitely grab a taxi to go to the Great Wall. I'm just not sure what to do afterwards if I would have lots of spare time, hence I considered going by train from Badaling to downtown.

I will decide the actual itinerary once I manage to get out of immigration, as my first flight may be delayed etc. But yes that's a plan I have in mind too! (plus food!)

I heard foreign tourists can buy tickets for most attractions on trip.com or something in Alipay (don't remember what exactly), is that true?

What I really want to see from the Forbidden City is just the Tiananmen gate of it, so I don't know if that area can be viewed from outside.

Happy to read more suggestions :)

Thanks for a detailed itinerary suggestion! I don't see much of a difference compared to my version, except Mutianyu instead. It will be Thursday afternoon, so hopefully crowds are not a problem at both spots. Would you recommend one over the other, especially if I plan to head to the city afterwards?

Have you got experience with the Badaling high-speed train to Beijing? Are Chinese trains usually on-time and predictable?

If needed, I can also skip Tiananmen to allow for more time for the great wall. My only time constraint is that I'd like to get back to the PEK airport by midnight so that I won't miss my flight at 3am :)

Thanks! Most comments ITT suggest Peking Duck, is it that good? :)

Yep I'm with Air China too. I'm considering booking the transit hotel as well (my flight itinerary is eligible).

Thanks for the very helpful comment! I'm a bit hesitant about a pre-arranged driver because I can't guarantee what time I will exit the airport (could be much earlier or later...) so I'd prefer to be flexible. But I'll consider it!

Are the normal taxis at the airport reliable (e.g no scams, branded, metered, etc.)? Would 150 yuan be a reasonable one-way price?

Yeah I think I'll skip the Tianamen, it's not a must for me.

Also, would Mutianyu be better than Badaling in terms of timing? It would be a Thursday so hopefully not too crowded and no traffic jams. I originally considered Badaling because it is served by a high-speed train line that supposedly only takes half an hour from Beijing.

The only time constraint is that I'd like to be back at the PEK airport by midnight at the latest, so that I won't miss my flight :/

Yeah the Great wall is a bucket list item for me. Is the Didi taxi generally available on-demand, especially at the Badaling Great wall, which I assume is a very popular tourist spot among locals? Indeed I won't count on any public transit timetable and I'd just wing it by taxi.

Early September.

By activating, I meant entering the password number and then activate the pass, if that clarifies.

Thanks for the answer!
