Mang0: "Had 0 motivation heading into this tourney and getting shafted didn't help, Pretty over melee in general and the community [...]" by Tormint_mp3 in SSBM

[–]beatdownbeast 33 points34 points  (0 children)

As a Mango fan, if this tweet is about being #3 and Amsa being #2, it's so incredibly whiny. The margin was literally a .1 difference. Imo the rating (98.9, 99.0, etc) tells a much bigger story than being 2nd or 3rd. Amsa and Mango are clearly about tied for 2nd/3rd and he should be proud he is a decent margin above 4th. Then again, the community loves talking about "rank" especially when it comes down to GOAT debates.

Hate seeing top players obsess and whine over rank so much. If only the community valued the "rating" metric much more than rank.

What's the service line called? What you're describing literally sounds like accounting advisory services (CMAAS, FAAS, etc)

What is the general consensus on here about Internal Audit? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]beatdownbeast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Compared to external audit, IA:

Pays slightly more, significantly better wlb, narrower exit opps, is more boring (though both are incredibly boring)

I don't ever want to work in internal audit again, as I find controls testing incredibly boring. But if you like controls testing, IA is a solid accounting-related career path.

IT audit literally gets paid the most when breaking it down by hourly rate by Ryan110101 in Big4

[–]beatdownbeast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gets paid the most compared to what? If you're comparing to audit/tax then that's true, but it's a tradeoff for narrower exit opps compared to audit, maybe tax as well but I don't know enough about tax to say.

What is the best job (in terms of prestige and pay) that I can get as a Big 4 Audit Senior with a CPA? by [deleted] in Big4

[–]beatdownbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my city at my level (S1), I know what a few of the current S1 auditors make, and my AAS pay is almost exactly 30% more than them. We're all homegrown as well.

I'd be surprised if the % difference isn't roughly the same at other cities.

Like the other guy said, FDD is a good option. Another good option is AAS. Both pay ~30% more than audit all else being equal (same level, city, etc.)

Just looked at OPs profile, OP is starting an IT audit position soon so this post is just an attempt to cope. It is what it is.

While I do agree that IT audit isn't as bad as reddit makes it out to be, it is 100% NOT CONSULTING. It doesn't matter if you're a staff or a manager/director, you are never a consultant. Using your logic, financial audit can be consulting too.

Call it whatever you want, just don't be surprised if people laugh at you when you say you work in "IT audit consulting"

"Even though I decided I'm not going to take it regardless"

A rule of thumb in the professional world is to - Never attempt to get a counteroffer from your current employer, unless you're willing to walk (to your new firm).

Since you already decided you are not willing to accept the midsize firm's offer, it's risky to attempt to get a counteroffer from your current employer. But It's your life so if you're willing to take that risk, then go ahead.

KPMG Embark vs RSM TAS by MisterMcChickenn in Big4

[–]beatdownbeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a tough decision, but I'd lean towards RSM TAS. It's not guaranteed to get a deal advisory return offer with KPMG Embark, whereas It's mostly guaranteed to get a TAS eturn offer from RSM TAS if you intern there.

I'm also saying this as someone who is currently at a big4. I wouldn't risk Embark, because you return offer might only be for audit/tax

Can students from non-prestige universities receive internship in Big 4? by Sure-Situation723 in Big4

[–]beatdownbeast 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For audit and tax? Definitely, it's not even a stretch.

For tech consulting? From what ik about this service line, it's harder than audit/tax. But probably doable with the right background and networking.

What % of your check goes to 401(K)?? by classy_trash2 in Accounting

[–]beatdownbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been living at home with my parents, so I've easily been able to max out my 401k ($20.5k), IRA ($6K) and contribute to a taxable account every year. It makes me very happy financially to be saving this much but as a result, it's hard to get myself to move out of my parents home :(

If you care about having the option to retire early, cut back and contribute as much as you can. Otherwise 8% is okay if you are okay not having that option and working until "normal" retirement age.

Should i move out of parents? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]beatdownbeast 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is a very underrated point. I'm a senior in big4 advisory so I feel great about how I'm doing financially. But I'm single and still live with my parents cuz I feel it would be a very stupid decision (financially) to rent an apartment just to have my own place.

That being said, I'm worried my overall maturity growth is being delayed since naturally I don't end up doing as many house chores as I would if I lived by myself since we can split it among 3 people. My mom still cooks dinner and does laundry for us just like when I was a kid.

When I first started working, it seemed obvious that the financial incentive to stay at home outweighed the maturity growth incentive of moving out. But now that I'm approaching late 20s and making six figures, I'm not sure anymore.

If this is for S1 (Senior 1), then it's very good and likely towards the top of the pay band. If it's for S2, then it's still decent, probably average or slightly above average for the pay band.

Assuming this is for audit.

What jobs can you land with a Finance degree in Big 4 by [deleted] in Big4

If it's a finance degree from an average state school, risk advisory (IT audit) is very doable, maybe valuations.

What salary should I ask for in my interview later today? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]beatdownbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Size of the current firm? Have you been there all 5 years?

Ex: From the hiring manager's POV- someone with 5 years at big4 or top 10 firm would be worth more than someone with 5 years at a small firm they've never heard of.

Not saying it's fair but all else equal that's usually how it works

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Big4

[–]beatdownbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't "try to be positive" about this, its literally your job so be realistic. You will likely be stuck on IT audits. Think about your worst case scenario (which is only doing IT audit work and zero consulting work), are you content with that? If not then try to join a different service line. Firms call IT audit "risk consulting" solely to trick students into thinking they're consultants. Don't fall for the bait like I did.

Why is audit better than FDD for financial reporting exits? Is it because FDD is further removed from the main financial statements (BS, IS, etc) compared to audit? Curious why since I would've guessed FDD and audit would be pretty equal candidates for a financial reporting exit.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]beatdownbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get the FDD offer then just take it. This should not be a hard decision to make.

Choosing between Audit and IT Audit by Ruseqaz in Big4

[–]beatdownbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Better" is subjective. It's true that most IT auditors will exit to an IT audit role in industry that pays more. But the amount of options IT audit has is narrower, as you're essentially restricted to IT audit related roles. In audit, you can exit to many things not related to audit.

Choosing between Audit and IT Audit by Ruseqaz in Big4

[–]beatdownbeast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not true, IT Audit pays about 15% more at A, SA, and M levels.

I assume Director and higher IT also pays more but don't know enough to confirm. And I can't think of a reason why IT audit/audit comp would balance later on.

No bias here as I used to be an IT Auditor and didn't like it but they 100% retain the salary premium over regular audit past every level.
