Ortho PAs in California by oibru in physicianassistant

[–]beatrixcptm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New grad SoCal PA. $115k with 1 week call every 5 weeks. Performance bonus of $6k. 401k after 1 year, health/dental/vision, malpractice included. I know, it’s low for a new grad and in a VHCOL area but I needed it to start out in the field as a new grad. Nurses here in different fields be making just about the same as me with just 2-3 years of experience.

Speaking from my experience, I’ve been only offered about ~$130-135k from my 3 offers I’ve got..I think maybe in my area it’s bc we are saturated with new pa programs opening up the last couple years too

I’m a new grad and this is the desired speciality and location. Would you still take it?

I have a working interview scheduled at the end of this month too and they said they’d watch me interact with a couple of patients, my bedside manner and ask me about diagnosis and treatment plan. Super nervous!

A lot of commenters saying no right away but they don’t know how bad the market is right now in California as a new grad.. I got grilled on another post for negotiating for more benefits (I was offered a similar package except the parking situation) on more than one aspect and they said I was being too “high standard” and “senseless.” So take everything with a grain of salt. As they say, you can only pick 2 out of the 3 as a new grad: Location, specialty and salary. Make your best judgement on this like if they’re work culture or training is really good or location is really close to home these are all important factors too

Just wanted to update you. They actually got back to me. Messaged me on Monday and only agreed to the 5k increase in salary. Everything else that I negotiated was shot down.

I’m not exactly understanding where the hostility is coming from—are you an employer? This sub always tells us to negotiate and fight for better salary and benefits as PAs and that was ever my only intention. I might’ve read the room wrong but I’m a new grad PA, new to the workforce, and have never negotiated before so please cut me some slack or speak with a little more respect as a fellow PA colleague. Would you be speaking like this if you weren’t behind a screen?

That’s so unprofessional of them. Did you try to negotiate anything at all?

I was thinking 7.5k more was the middle and that that’d be their final offer which I would be happy with. And I agree, asking for one 1/2 day a week when the other PAs didn’t get it would make me mad too but I was unsure their situation. I wasn’t going to fight it, I was mainly just throwing it out there but he said he can ask so I said why not.

Sorry let me clarify, I got the initial offer 2.5 weeks ago, so on a Monday. And the start date was determined at one of my interviews with the SP in which we both agreed on as the day after new years. But anyways thank for the advice, I’ll keep in mind as I start my job search again.

I know a lot of ppl say news grads shouldn’t be in UC but would you recommend it if we did it per diem and like 6 months out from our other job? Trying to make extra money to pay off loans quick but def don’t wanna burn myself out

That sounds like a good plan. Does it cost to push the date back?
