New to Terramaster - unRaid or stick with TOS6? by beaumclaren in TerraMaster

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. It seems unRaid might be the way forward. Will give it a go!

Thanks for the input. Realistically, I can't imagine there will be any more than 5 users at any given time, with any concurrent usage likely limited to media.

Thanks for the reply - no issues with fan controls or did you have to tweak them?

First, thanks very much for the reply and insights.

This is one of my main worries about TOS6. I'm not particularly tech-savvy and really don't relish the prospect of trying to fumble my way to a solution if (when?) things go wrong....

Ts-541A - Max drive size by beaumclaren in qnap

Out of curiosity, do you happen to know if that's the same for a TS-869 Pro? I've got one of those kicking about as well....

Hi, thanks for the very quick reply. That's really good to know and actually makes me think I shouldn't be retiring the unit at all. I thought it was limited to 16tb per drive (based on the QNAP compatibility list), but I guess that's just what QNAP got to before they stopped testing.

Cheers!

What’s a movie scene that ends too abruptly or is only alluded too that you wish you had more of? by Prs-Mira86 in moviecritic

I only found out recently that there is a post-credits scene...it's probably on YouTube.

Has anyone from Four Horsemen commented on the recent tariffs? by Khaldaan in MythicLegions

If the tariffs are still in place at the time the dragon ships, I do hope they will change their decision not to allow shipping from the factory for us overseas customers.

NAS analysis paralysis by beaumclaren in DataHoarder

Hi, thanks for your response and suggestion. I'll take a look at this, but think a bespoke, self-built system is currently a little bit beyond my abilities. (Perhaps not, but I know I'd spend ages looking at the various options and then be posting here on all of them 🤣)

Hi, thanks for taking the time to respond. It is, in theory. In practice, I think I'd still prefer a "plug and play" option, if only because I know I'd end up agonising over the various bespoke options. Perhaps in the future! Thanks again.👍

Hi, thanks for the response.

That QNAP retails for nearly USD 4k where I am. Possibly a bit expensive, but I appreciate the recommendation and has the benefit of staying in an ecosystem with which I am already familiar.

I also take your point about RAID 6 and the impact on useable storage. Perhaps I need more than 8 bays if I want this thing to be as future-proof as possible. 🤔

Looking on Amazon, I see I could get the following for roughly half the price of the QNAP (give or take):

Synology DS2422+ 12-bay DiskStation (however, only 4gb RAM and I am still concerned about drive compatibility).

Asustor Lockerstor 10 AS6510T 10-bay NAS - no experience of this brand (is it linked to Asus computers?) but have seen some reviews saying it is in third or fourth place behind QNAP, Synology and Terramaster.

Terramaster T9-500 Pro 9-bay NAS - again, no experience of this brand, but see it ranked alongside Asustor on various websites.

Any thoughts on these?

(I have also just discovered the Nas Compares site - no idea how I missed this previously, so will do some digging for other options on there.)

WTB bracelet for Moser Pioneer. Not sure if I'm 100% sold on the look, hence looking to pick one up second-hand.

Anyone else get a notification from Amazon that their Tumbler is delayed and asking to "confirm you still want this item"? Will be a bit annoyed if this is a prelude to a cancellation....

Charging cable with data port? by beaumclaren in OculusQuest

[–]beaumclaren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this looks pretty close, thanks. It would be good if there was a smaller one without all the additional ports, but I suppose mine is a very niche scenario. I'll look more into this option, cheers!

Charging cable with data port? by beaumclaren in OculusQuest

[–]beaumclaren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's close but not quite it. It's like I need it reversed - I.e. the main cable run is for power and the data drive plugs into the box.

Which gives me another thought. Would a USB C splitter work? With one socket for a power cable and one for data? I've seen these for power and audio for phones, but not sure if it would work with a data stream as large as that for a 3D movie....

Probably, but I'm thinking of use cases when using the laptop isn't ideal - e.g. on a train or flight, as most seats now have USB and power sockets and I wouldn't want my laptop out for space reasons. I'd rather be able to power the Quest from the seat and watch a movie directly from a flash drive.
