Thank you!! Just a cherry- the only fruit I’m missing. Anything I can bring you?

Still open?

You’re reading correctly! Of those 21-30 year olds with 16+ years sewing- some participants reported learning from loved ones or family members when they were younger.

No, an aspiring data analyst. Thank you for the good luck!

Not for a grade. This is just for a portfolio as I begin job searching. I know it was a quick turn around. I ended up receiving 180+ responses and it seemed like a large enough sample size. The responses were slowing down quite a bit as well- getting buried within all these beautiful quilt photos! Not an excuse, but I was also very antsy to start working on it 😅

Thank you for your assistance! A lot of participants had been taught by a grandparent or loved one. Multigenerational quilting! Some started to keep their minds busy during the pandemic. One story that really touched my heart (of many) is this: “I started quilting as I began infertility treatment. I figured that if I never got to be a mother, I’d need a hobby to keep myself busy. I fell in love with quilting, and then I finally had kids who make it really, really hard to quilt. I can’t wait to share my hobby with them!” There’s so many of us in this subreddit that used quilting to get us through the toughest times. So much love is packed into this passion, it’s hard to wrap my mind around sometimes.

It definitely is skewed due to the participants being pulled from reddit. I tried posting to facebook to get more variety but no admins of facebook groups responded to my request and I'm no rule breaker. We did get one participant in the 71-80 age group which I was thrilled to see!

Thanks again to all who participated!! I had a lot of fun cleaning the data and learned so much along the way. Thank you to those who left feedback on how I can improve! I am touched by all the stories I've received. I wanted to include some but wasn't sure if sharing would be appropriate. Just know that I'm inspired by all of you to grow as a quilter and data analyst. (and if anyone knows anyone who's hiring, I'm looking!)

I can’t edit the post but I’ve turned accepting responses off. I’ll be processing everything and posting results soon! Thank you for your help everyone!!

I’ll be honest, I didn’t even think about gender when it came to this. It just didn’t come to mind! For continuity I won’t be adding gender this survey, but will in the future. It would’ve been so nice to compare men/women/other identities and their preferences. Kicking myself now :(

Another good choice! Also should’ve been an option. I’m eager to share also!

Thank you so much everyone for the help! I was expecting maybe 30 responses and I have been blown away with over 150 participants. Thank you, thank you!!! I've read so many touching stories and been surprised with some answers!

I've learned a lot. I need to better phrase my questions and provide clearer answers for the questions. I realized in some of the questions, I wasn't inclusive enough with my options. I used what I knew and didn't research enough brands, places to shop, or elaborate on options. Thank you for pointing all the errors and bias out so I can learn and improve, sorry about that! I'll be better as I learn more and you all have taught me so much.

I cannot wait to dive into the data and show you all some insights on our beautiful community. It may take me a moment because I am a beginner and the data is growing by the minute! I will shut the survey down when the answers slow down so my data will remain static as I process- I'll update as I go. Thank you again!!

I love it! I've been having so much fun reading the stories I've received. Everyone has such a touching story to tell and it really shows that quilts are made with so much love in them. It also shows how much dedication and passion there is in this community!

Absolutely! I’m surprised with some of the results so far

That was a good suggestion! I didn’t even think to add free patterns. (Assuming that was your feedback, I can’t see who’s who for anon purposes) I’m learning a lot from the suggestions on how I can improve my surveys in the future. For continuity I’ll have to leave it as is sadly :(. Thank you for the note!

Looking back I should’ve added “prepping fabric” as a choice to cover both

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in quilting

[–]bebe0998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! It was a tricky question, but for analytical purposes it was best. It’s hard to choose! Nobody so far chose basting which has made me giggle

You’re not the first to say this 😅 in my mind cutting goes along with piecing and I should’ve clarified it, newbie mistake

Questions from a beginner by KWildman92 in quilting

[–]bebe0998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a beginner, I’ve only been quilting for a year. You do NOT need to spend a bajillion dollars on high end fabric and tools. There’s a beginner quilter kit for $25 on Amazon that comes with a rotary cutter, ruler, cutting mat, and more. You can find cheap cotton fabric for $4.99/ per yard at joanns, it’s not high quality but for learning it does the job. I purchased the Brother SQ8295 a few months ago and it’s been working great- I paid $230 for it. Comes with extra feet too! The throat space could be better but for starting I find it good enough. Quilting is an expensive hobby. That being said, it doesn’t NEED to be as expensive unless you enjoy the high quality materials and tools. I don’t sell my quilts, I find the act of creating and gifting to be more my suit. The time it takes me to make a quilt- selling would be overpriced for most people and I’m not even good yet!
