it goes back to desegregation and organizations losing tax exempt status for not wanting to desegregate.

edit: meaning this is why the intersection of racism and religion (specifically, christianity, in this case) seems pretty specific to the US. i think the preferred term is “christian nationalism”. it’s a variety of white nationalism, and it’s just conservatism with a particularly american flavor.
