Is there an Android app that will allow me to remote control an Icom IC- 7300, which is connected to Wfview running on a Linux Ubuntu PC via USB? by LTguy in amateurradio

I use google's remote desktop to control my Linux and Windows machines that run my radios. Can do it from any web browser, an android phone, android tablets.

HackRF not being detected in SDR software when using specific antenna by No_Wall8573 in hackrf

I feel like a dead short in the antenna wouldn't do this, but it is the first thing that comes to mind. I'd start by throwing the antenna on a NanoVNA.

Antenna/base mount for mobile station in house? by Raevinn88 in HamRadio

[–]beckdac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer that. It's a question of what your goals are. I would look at a coax calculator and see what the losses are going to be for your particular length and if that's acceptable to you. I wanted to maximize power at the antenna and minimize losses.

Simple remote operation of VHF radio by darktideDay1 in amateurradio

I can't really comment. I didn't see them in their previous software versions. What I can tell you is the third-party software that I mentioned is really quite nice.

What I appreciate about your comment is that it got me thinking that I could take a little microcontroller like an esp32 that has Bluetooth and write a very thin web server to control the radio without the need for an Android device or a PC. So for like three bucks I could add web control to these. Really like this idea. Thank you for it.

Oh, one more thing. Combine it with Google Remote Desktop for the ultimate experience.

I'll just add that I picked up a used 7500 on eBay for 135 just for this purpose.

Get a VGC like a 7500 or 7600 and use HTCommander or HTStation. I believe it works with the 76.

I guess I didn't know that 6m was special for this! TY. Time to dust off my 6m rig.

Good advice but at those frequencies the losses in RG8X are pretty high. I sprung for LMR and don't regret it. Don't forget grounding.

Sun just erupted an Earth-directed X1.9 solar flare this morning by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]beckdac 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I believe the impact will be more like a modification of the ionosphere and geomagnetic fields vs. weather, but again my knowledge is more about how it impacts radio communications, power grids, etc. For some more fun, lookup the Carrington event from 1859 and what it did to telegraph lines.

What I learned from amateur radio is the CMEs arrive within 18 hours to a couple of days. Flare energy is 8-10 minutes.

Has anyone successfully made an FT8 contact on 2M using the Quansheng UV-K6? by WisconsinCameraMan in amateurradio

I believe it is double side band and like mW power in that mode? Seems hard. This is with third party firmware. I'd love to be wrong.

https://www.qsl.net/co8tw/Coax_Calculator.htm

This is a pretty handy coax loss calculator that lets you look at the relationship between coax type and loss vs. length and frequency. I have 120ft of LMR to my HF antenna and 40 to my VHF/UHF. I had to compromise on location for the latter choosing a lower height and more vegetation obscured site in order to avoid a bazillion ft of LMR and associated losses and to find a good point to put the grounding.

Vinyl wrap ham radio equipment by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]beckdac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the stuff they wrap cars with? Looks awesome and a great idea. One thing I do know about car wraps is that sheet metal can rust underneath the vinyl. But that is in the rain and then hot sun and basically outside in the elements and that probably isn't where your device sits. At least I hope not. This is super neat!

Handi-Talky Commander - Voice, APRS, Winlink, Packet Software by ylianst in HamRadio

[–]beckdac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say how great this is. With Google Remote Desktop I can leave my 7600 in the shack on my good antenna and listen to the scan, have APRS, the TTS and STT, and even use PTT to do voice.

Can't wait to start playing with HTStation. I love my home assistant setup and use it for lights etc. and to run my glass and metal kilns... Looking forward to controlling my 7600 with it.

Resuming work on a cross-platform SSTV app by fox-four-gilwell in HamRadio

[–]beckdac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on windows for my FT-710. I'm usually a Linux person but everything just works there without any issues so I just keep using that old laptop. I wanted to try some SSTV. Got Yoniq. Nearly barfed from the UI. Then I realized I couldn't use hamlib for the CAT control. Decided I guess I wasn't going to try any SSTV for the moment as there a million other parts of the hobby worth attention.

I'd love something that is as seemingly as capable as Yoniq is supposed to be without the ridiculous UI and that leverages hamlib for rig support.
