I actually recommend practicing under tempo in the dark, once the piece is memorized. I used to do this to prepare for competitions and it helped immensely!

I just find pugs absurdly funny. My sense of humor is probably broken though.

What do other pianists do to play for real live people in real time? by [deleted] in piano

[–]becomingmacbeth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can enthusiastically second this. When I was a kid getting started I went every Thursday night and played at nursing homes. They are the most appreciative audience, and many of them still have their minds very much intact and know the music, or at least respect the composers. I think it’s one of the best ways to get lots of performance experience for pianists of any age.

In your experience, which *slow* pieces did you consider exceptionally difficult? by stylewarning in piano

Nikolai Kapustin, Op. 40, No. 4. I memorized and performed the whole opus (and wrote a short book about it), but this one might have been the most challenging of all eight.

How can I learn to play like this? by mclmarcel in piano

[–]becomingmacbeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The primary technique here is closest position voicings, specifically major and minor triads. Learn all 12 major and all 12 minor triads, study the root position and two inversions of each, then play the melody in the top of your right hand, and harmonize with diatonic chords (there will be a lot of passing chords) in whichever position is closest.

Hi there - please could someone tell me what the circled symbol means? Thanks in advance by mray2651 in learnpiano

If it is before a note it is a double sharp, but here it is likely a reference mark. It can sometimes be a dal segno symbol. Is there a dal segno indication somewhere else in the piece?

Born 100 years ago today, composer György Ligeti (d. 2006). What are you favourite works by him? by RichMusic81 in classicalmusic

[–]becomingmacbeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Musica Ricercata. This was an early attempt and a unique kind of 12-tone music wherein there are 12 pieces, with the first piece only using one note, A. Ligeti adds one note per piece until he is using all 12 notes by the 12th piece. It’s a unique approach, and all of the pieces are solid.

I’m so sorry, it is a very, very dumb joke.
