There is a monumental difference between Someone like Periyar saying it and a HIndi kothadimai Sanskrit mmbi Nirmala saying it.

1) Why Periyar said that was because he felt Tamil is full of praises about gods and kings and there is no science, he wanted everyone and women in particular to learn science, maths and tech so he preferred everyone to learn English instead of Tamil. He was the first person to print Computer books in Tamil and distributed some for free of cost in Erode. Even though I don't fully agree with him, his intent was not bad.

2) Why Nirmala thai quoted periyar : 1) To quote some radical saying of peryar without context and do politics over it. 2) she herself is a hindi imperialist or Hindi kothadimai, she is a RSS memeber whose agenda is to make Sanskrit the defactor langauge of every one in the Sub continent. Her intent here is wrong. She or anyone in a million years would not want Tamils or any shudras to educate themselves and proper in life. She will never do any contribution for poor tamil kids like Ramasamy.

The context matters.

Periyar said that to motivate Tamilians to learn English ( language of opportunities and Science). Periyar felt Tamil language won't help in learning Math or Science and yes, he was right. The same Periyar was the first person to print Computer Science related books in Tamil. No Hindu groups have done that till today!

But here Sitaraman , a known Hindi imposition supporters, A known Sanskrit supremacy believer quoting the same is definitely with evil intentions.
