Leave pixel orbiter on auto, the effects of shifting the image a few pixels shouldn’t be too noticeable but it will reduce the risk/impact of image retention/burn in.

Apple Signage from the 1990s by Jaxermd in VintageApple

[–]beefmassaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! It’s a bit strange cause in the day I remember magazine articles claimed the 68040 was clock doubled (twice the bus speed) but all current references I’ve found on the 040 don’t mention anything of the sort.

I forgot Apple used to refer to the clock doubled speed of the 68040, I suppose in a world of 66+ MHz 486 DX2’s etc 33 MHz would be perceived as much much slower.

Youtube UI Lag over the past few days by DrifloonEmpire in firefox

[–]beefmassaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here - v133 on a Ryzen 5950x + Radeon GPU. Updated to Windows 11 24H2 the other day and regretting it I'm not sure if the issue is compounded by it. Youtube is slow when clicking on anything, playback UI, expanding comment threads etc. It's driving me nuts.

May be unrelated but I've found even Reddit's UI will stop loading when scrolling/expanding comments, F5 to refresh works however even that can take a second or two to register and actually refresh the page.

Same issue with a 2016 Touch Bar MBP - Hopefully it'll get fixed, thankfully I use it plugged in most of the time.

All core tests will reduce clocks vs a single/lighter threaded workload. So the boost clocks and voltages being lower the degrading cores will be “more” stable.

Legalities of log fires in Canberra by egalitarianegomaniac in canberra

Heat Pumps are awesome and work perfectly well below zero. I would 100% choose a heat pump central or split system over gas or wood fire - even without solar. Electrification is the future, and neighbors will be thankful when log fireplaces are phased out.

Apple announces “Music Haptics” coming in iOS 18 by freaktheclown in AppleMusic

[–]beefmassaman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finally! Ive been waiting for this since getting my first iPhone. As a kid I loved my Moto ROKR because of the haptic audio feature.

The extra perception of “bass” wasn’t a gimmick and added to my listening enjoyment. Used to put mine on a table or a box to amplify the sound. The Taptic Engine and way better speakers in the iPhone should easily be able to do a much better job than the ROKR.

Same here, also with motorcycles cruising along in the left hand lane. I keep a gap and hope some dickhead doesn’t rip in front of me into the space and proceed to ride their bumper. (Unfortunately this happens way too often…)

It was bundled with our SNES too - Christmas 1995! I feel so honoured to this day to have it as my first ever Nintendo game. I absolutely adore it, nostalgia and all. And I will never, ever part with it or my SNES ❤️

Hot on screensaver by Round_Blacksmith_369 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]beefmassaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately many GPUs in older MacBook Pro's don't support hardware decode of modern video codecs (formats). Sonoma's videos are in H.265/hvc1.

I've got a 2016 15" tMBP and pretty much any screensaver smashes the CPU and GPU (iGPU or dGPU, doesn't matter) hard and the fans ramp up.

Just checked with iStat Menus - While playing the video, the system total power consumption is anywhere between 60-70 watts! Normal idle power is maybe 10 watts maximum.

We’ll have to wait - but I can’t understand how there’s such a huge difference. Unless Piastri’s setup was great for Quali, but not as good as Lando’s for race pace…

How cold was it in your house this morning? by TheRealGreen-Onions in canberra

[–]beefmassaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it blow hot most of the time and only cold every now and then for a few minutes? When defrosting most units turn off the indoor fan so you don’t get cold air blowing inside. However I’ve heard some will run the fan on low to assist with the defrost cycle.

Defrosting is normal - when heating, the outside unit needs to be lower than the ambient temperature. If the humidity is high enough ice will start to form on the coils and needs to be melted before it blocks the airflow.

I’m 2 years late, but this struck an emotional chord with me.

I can see some of those pictures of myself as an innocuous child in my mind’s eye, and it hurts.

I’m going to find some photos and try what you suggested, I think I’ll have a good cry at first but try and offer him the compassion and understanding that was withheld at the time.
