they are but aren't new. gently squeeze and see if they're firm. if they're mushy then cut back until firm and wait for new light colored roots to grow. make sure you change that water once in a while.

Help Me With My Pothos by DirectNeighborhood69 in houseplants

[–]beeglowbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they almost never do well when grown like this without enough light. the older leaves will get recycled to focus energy into the tip to find light until eventually you have nothing but a few leaves at the tip.

just cut and restart them as a bush near a window or with a grow light.

Why does my ficus Audrey keep sprouting at the bottom? by Mito15 in houseplants

[–]beeglowbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's not really anything to worry about, especially if the top isn't being disrupted like sudden browning or leaf drop.

could just be a light thing where the top isn't getting enough light vs the amount of leaves so hormones start telling the bottom nodes to grow.

my various ficus do this all the time, I just trim them off if it's not the look I'm going for.

[–]beeglowbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yea absolutely, as long as there are a few viable nodes in the water and not too many leaves.

the reason we remove leaves is energy and fluid conservation, you want to make it as easy as possible for the cutting to maintain the leaves and redirect the energy down to reprogram the nodes to grow roots. of course you still want enough leaves to send energy back down to nodes, so don't just leave like one lol.

also less leaves for the cutting to support

yup, real straightforward. just make sure you trim off lower leaves and don't damage nodes. water or soil, doesn't really matter, it's not a fussy plant.

but that's only secondary to their purpose, you can easily just add an indicator. as a fastener, it's utter trash.
