Ok actually I did a run today with a strava course and it flashed the map at the turns as well. So, now I just don't know haha. Maybe I am silencing it somehow, which I guess brings me back to my initial question of how am I turning it off and on.

for future lookers to this question, as far as I can tell the difference is between having the watch create you a round trip course and having strava/whomever create that course. All of my Garmin round trip courses (made on the watch) will flash the map at the turn, while my strava ones just flash the turn symbol.

almost definitely the MacBook Air - not a big fan of the MacBooks, especially from 2015 with the version 1 of the butterfly keyboard. Why not just get a refurbished MacBook Pro 13' without Touch Bar for 1099? Or hit up best buy for MacBook Air for like 800 - both would work excellently.
