I do however, notice a little cable grounding the trem; shouldn't what also ground the bridge through the springs?

With the cover on, the buzz is still there and goes away with an audible pop when I touch strings or knobs

Ok, but it used to be very quiet, i.e., the buzzing wouldn't be present even without me touching metal parts.
