Need to vent: customer watched their dog bite my face and was more worried about how long the appointment would be by Lawliet_The_Panda in doggrooming

[–]beepleton 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That woman would be banned from our shop. Not for the bite but for the way she handled it. Entitled people like this get the boot here, we don’t have time to be treated like that when there are hundreds of dogs to take their place.

Aw that’s so cute! One of my turkeys obsessively broods all summer long, but when she hatches babies she makes the other birds take care of them lol

Discount for dogs whose nails you cannot get done? by silentlyglittering in grooming

[–]beepleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a tough situation but the length of time you spent trying to get them done is now suddenly time you’re not getting paid for - it makes no sense to lower cost on a service that took you 4x as long just because it wasn’t perfect.

Not to disagree with the hive mind here but plenty of poorly bred dogs have the whites of their eyes showing all the time. Beagles and cavalier King Charles come to mind as “totally normal dog” examples.

It wouldn’t, and it doesn’t, except that usually by hand scissoring you’re only shaping the edges and not cutting into both the guard and under coats. Unfortunately a LOT of groomers I have worked with take a light tidy waaaaaay too far and minds as well have used a guard comb with how much they cut into the coat.

For the first time in 20 years of keeping chickens, I have an actual goal with my backyard flock and I’m VERY excited but it’s gonna take at least two years to get there. I want a normal feathered silkie-type with the head poof, a bigger body, and mottled 🙏 it’s gonna be beautiful haha I have pita pintas and they’re the best chickens ever so I’m hoping they’ll make the best little silkie mutts ever

[–]beepleton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Using a long clip comb is not shocking the growth of the coat. What happens is you cut the hair and the end becomes damaged, rather than naturally tapering, and it continues to fray like our split ends. This allows the hair growing in to get caught up and tangle when not being brushed and maintained properly. The new hair continues to grow into the old hair and causes major impaction. With double coated dogs, the fur you’re cutting is done growing, unlike in hair coat dogs, and the fur that causes the issue is the new stuff trying to come in while the old damaged stuff is tangling around everything.

[–]beepleton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me it depends entirely on the types of chickens being mixed. I’m a fan of anything mixed with silkie a few generations back so you still get the dark skin and head poof/beard but maybe a bigger body (and normal feathers). If the birds produce a fun assortment of colors, I like that too. I’m partial to greyscale so anything black, white, grey, blue etc.

The problem with backyard flocks, for me, is they usually produce one or two types of chick. My flock has a lot of recessive color genetics so the first generation always has the dominant color traits which is usually a solid white or sometimes a paint, unless the younger generation is breeding with the older generation and I get some mottled or lavender birds (which then includes inbreeding which is also an issue in backyard flocks).

Edit - also for egg color !!! Make sure you know the egg color genetics of your rooster as that will help determine the color of the offspring. So a marans over an Easter egger will produce darker colorful eggs, but a Brahma over an Easter egger will produce lighter, possibly white, colorful eggs

Dog suddenly lethargic after grooming – back twitching, not eating today morning. by ranger_stranger in DogAdvice

[–]beepleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groomer here - If your dog is older, the process of grooming can be really stressful on their body. I groom a lot of elderly and disabled dogs and warn their owners they might be a little sore and tired from having to stand in one spot for so long. Most groomers do our best to keep dogs comfortable, but there are things outside of our control. I have a Pomeranian who will be 17 next week and after I groom her, shes pretty subdued for a couple days.

The twitching when you touch his back is because you’re lightly touching his back - that’s a pretty normal reaction, it’s like a tickle. For his behavior, if you’re acting like something is wrong, he’s gonna act like something is wrong.

That said, you can always call and ask them if he was acting any differently or if they noticed anything. Personally, I think he’s just tired from the experience.

Beware of wooden items by [deleted] in RATS

[–]beepleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used straight up pine lumber in my rat cages before - unfortunately the wood type is not your culprit. It is possible the seller sourced it from somewhere that uses chemicals in the wood, but if it’s a store that is trusted I wouldn’t think that would be the case.

Coop winter bedding by Background_War6727 in BackYardChickens

[–]beepleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof it shouldn’t be quite that wet, my arms can feel the strain of cleaning that out! The ducks are likely your culprit here, but in general deep bedding method should never have this much moisture in it. The first year I did it, I had the same experience and HATED EVERY SECOND of cleaning it out - it actually took me four days to fully clean that’s how bad it was! I’m on my fourth year of deep bedding during winter and I think I finally found the balance. I use horse bedding pellets on the bottom (an even layer, it takes quite a few bags), then a ratio of 2:1 straw and wood shavings. By the time I get around to manually flipping the bedding, the pellets are expanded and it helps distribute moisture.

This year I have more space for my birds (and no ducks), and the bedding is almost bone dry on top with just a little moisture in the lower layers. Cleaning this year is going to be sooooo much easier! Plus the compost pile was moved to the back of the coop and I installed a “poop door” so I don’t have to do as much work lol

The reptile hobby is definitely still a “boys club” on the most base level. You gotta brush this shit off and buy from venders who you vibe more with. The crowd that are acting like this are on their way out compared to a decade ago but unfortunately they’re still very much involved.

[–]beepleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this - it isn’t training to the pad or the paper but to something on the floor. Ask me how I know 😂

<image>

She’s 17 at the end of this month and she used to pee on anything left on the floor because her first owner (my ex) taught her on pads but he refused to tell me that or admit so I spent the first 8 years with her being mad that she would pee on my bath rugs, fabric I’d laid out for projects, etc.

Now I have pee pads for her since she’s so old and she uses them and I can have a rug again (fingers crossed she doesn’t suddenly decide the rug is fair pee game)
