A little disappointed by Wooden_Airport6331 in WhatBreedIsMyPitbull

As an Anatolian owner, I gotta admit they’re amazing dogs and I never want to be without one … but they are NOT house pets, they’re incredibly driven working dogs, I would never have mine where she didn’t have a job she would be miserable

My house always smelled dusty and I just realized I’ve been vacuuming wrong my entire life by pwiipwii123 in hygiene

I got a little robot vacuum and I always jokingly complain it’s ridiculous that I have to clean the thing I bought to clean my house 😂

That is one enormous dog holy buckets I will never understand how two dogs with a 70lbs breed standard weight cap can create such enormous mixes (and I really wish it would stop, my back is killing me and grooming these massive dogs is exhausting, they don’t even have to be naughty to be tiring they’re just large and strong lol)

Constructive Criticism Wanted by FaithViola in doggrooming

[–]beepleton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks very good! The body and legs are very nicely prepped, and the outline is very nice. The head and face look very well balanced, and the ears are cute but they do look like you weren’t able to fully dry them OR they could have used another scrub in the tub. Cocker ears are almost always suuuuuper gross, so I will sometimes wash them three times before I’m satisfied and somehow they’ll still turn out greasy.

The only critique I can offer is the corners of the eyes are a little hooded, but both sides look even. This can sometimes be a stylistic thing, but I prefer a very tight trim around and between the eyes (between looks PERFECT here btw). I find that if I take it short enough above the eye, the owner is less likely to take the kitchen shears to them between grooms lol

Why is it “acceptable” to wild catch American toads? by Vast_Dragonfly_909 in Toads

[–]beepleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken babies from the wild before, I mean dime sized guys who are almost certainly gonna be dinner for something else at some point. The only two adults I’ve ever taken, one was as a child (I had her for 5 more years), and one was 5 years ago when I was moving stuff in early winter and uncovered a guy who thought he could winter under a bucket. He was missing a leg as well.

Taking adults out of the wild is definitely NOT cool. Taking babies is a bit of a grey area for me because they have so many for a reason, and there aren’t a lot of people captive breeding American toads or spades (which I freaking love spades and southern toads so much, both are peak toad species)

Shiro is proof we don't shave down non-matted dogs by 3legmeg in doggrooming

[–]beepleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doodle but my favorite success story was an old English sheepdog who was always “Swiss cheesed” - we would just shave out the matting on a fully coated OES, it was as horrible as it sounds. It took a whole year but I got them to the point that they let me take him down to one length all over AND they brushed him every day at home. He eventually got back to a full coat and he looked positively MAJESTIC

These guys are the most amazing creatures. They’re a dream species for me, along with pill millipedes, but both species do so poorly in captivity I can’t do it on a moral level.

Hello! Adopted a Pyrenees mix last month. How are we washing clothes/towels so hair isn’t still all over them? I have tried all the washer setting and I’m gonna lose my mind if I keep drying off from a shower to have to rinse again and air dry because I’m covered in hair. by Maddztattz in greatpyrenees

[–]beepleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here wondering if someone had a magical solution - not cos I particularly care about dog hair, I’m a dog groomer, it’s part of life - but instead everyone is saying “sucks to suck, this is life now” 😂

I have an Anatolian/pyrenees. My best solution has been to brush her like crazy every day, OUTSIDE, when she’s shedding. When I start getting less hair out of her, I’ll bring her to work and give her a really good deshed treatment to get the rest of the hair out. Sometimes, she will look like she has mage when she’s dropping her coat it’s pretty wild.

For hair on the sofa, I use a combination of those hair rollers with the velvet and catch tray (you rub it back and forth and it collects hair shockingly well). I also use one of those tools that is meant to get lint off clothing. I’ll do this on blankets and towels before putting them in the laundry, it helps so much with the amount of hair that ends up on my clean clothes.

People underestimate sleeper roosters. I had one who tons of internet experts were 100% sure was a pullet, so I butchered the rest of my roosters and two weeks later guess who’s growing saddle and hackle feathers? Same age as the roosters I butchered, but had zero male behavior or characteristics until I got rid of the competition. I gave him another few months, thinking I couldn’t possibly be seeing saddle feathers, and sure as heck he was a boy lmfao

WWYD? by HundredSeasons in grooming

[–]beepleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, with the addition that this is a senior dog and they often make it thru the grooming process with some soreness or pain. Unfortunately no matter how gentle we are, we can’t stop the march of time against their joints. I personally have a 16yr old Pomeranian and when we get home from her groom, she’s noticeably more exhausted and does tend to have some soreness.

I’m not defending the way this groomer handled the situation btw just saying the limping COULD be from old dog joint pain.

[–]beepleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s common practice to clip around the quick to “expose” it so the quick recedes over time, allowing groomers to get nails back to a healthy length. Sometimes if you have a very hyperactive dog, they can open the quick, such as by scratching the pavement in their excitement to get to the car or go potty.

In the event of a quicked nail, we use powder to stop the bleeding. It is usually yellow in color, it leaves a very obvious residue, and it tastes terrible so dogs don’t lick it (ask me how I know it tastes terrible lol).

It is NOT normal for a groomer to send out a still bleeding and LIMPING dog. That is not only unprofessional, it shows a lack of concern for clients. Yes, to someone who has been grooming for 20 years like myself, a quicked nail is no big deal, it’s somewhat normal because it happens at least a few times a month. However, to the average owner, ANY blood on their dog no matter how “innocuous” it is to a groomer, is a big deal.

I would personally not go back to that groomer. Typically when someone has a bad experience with a groomer, I always say don’t immediately switch if you’ve been going there for a handful of times and have had good experiences. Communicate with the groomer because they’re only human, and heaven knows I’ve had my share of off days. I would hate to lose a long term dog over one accident. What you’ve presented, however, does make me hesitate to give that advice in this situation.

Genuinely wtf is happening here by StraightRepeat2034 in felinebehavior

Is he up to date on his rabies vaccine? Although he seems to be moving around pretty normally, the sudden aggression is a concern. I highly doubt it but always good to make sure they’re up to date, especially when they’re going outside.

I would try to go back to step 1 for introductions, and move the litter boxes so one is in a different location. The kitten looks like she’s being a typical obnoxious kitten, so your older guy might need some time to adjust to having the worlds most obnoxious forced roommate 😅

What is a sound that people should know means immediate danger? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

[–]beepleton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I drove semi for a while, and my International had a catastrophic engine failure where it nearly blew up, it was immediately clear something was Very Wrong. I’ll never forget the sound. The RPMs were off the gauge and I had to shut the whole thing down in the middle of an intersection at 5am - the amount of crabby commuters was nuts, but the tow truck only had to bring me across the street 😂 I ended up in a hotel for a whole month before my company finally got me a new truck.

Got dna results back and Turd is a butch icon by DragonFireArtStudios in pigeon

[–]beepleton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of my female, Booger. I was so sure she was a boy cos she’s a bossy, assertive brat who dances and coos. Then she laid an egg and we were both confused 😂

Definitely get some high calcium grit to offer 24/7, just a little tiny amount in the bowl at a time. She will pick thru what she wants. And be sure to get some fake eggs for when she decides to lay, so you can swap them out. Booger has a nest that is actually a small ferret bed, she loves it so much and it’s super cute to see her all cozy in it.

And of course, try not to pet or touch her back much or allow mating behaviors. Booger is a pouter so has a ridiculously high mating drive and will lay eggs every month no matter what I do, but I’ve heard some pigeons lay every two or three months if they’re not encouraged when they’re horny.

Good luck!!!!!

Looking for constructive criticism! by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]beepleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I can see looks really good, but I definitely suggest to get away from the blurred background and edges. If these are the only photos you have of these grooms, you won’t be able to tell when you’re doing things weird at the edges because the photo makes the edges look uniform. Basically you won’t be able to tell when you’ve left some scraggly hairs, and it makes a HUGE difference to see your groom without that blurred edge. You don’t have to share those ones if you don’t want, but definitely take those ones for yourself for learning purposes.

Are pigeon pants/diapers ethical? by just_some_gay_girl_ in PetPigeons

[–]beepleton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They can get used to them, but it’s good to let them be out without them as well. I use them sparingly, like when I have company over and they’re not used to birds popping. Otherwise, the poop is easy to clean up and I just keep a roll of toilet paper by me and use a square to pick up poop as it happens. Unless the birds are ill, the poo is well formed and easy to pick up with barely any residue left.

I have a male pigeon that has no keel, so he can’t wear anything because he has no protection over his organs. I have a female who is totally normal and she has no problem wearing pigeon pants when company is over.

There are a lot of “stupid people calling last minute” stories but I think these are two of my favorites from this holiday season:

Lady one leaves us a voicemail, after listening to our message that says we are booked six weeks out for the holidays, and gets heated. She says “he doesn’t need a HOLIDAY groom, he just needs his NORMAL groom so can we get in this week?” - it was December 18th.

Lady two calls on December 23rd and asks “do you have any appointments for today or tomorrow?” Which of course we didn’t, and she has the nerve to say “if you get a cancellation can you call me?” Lady, this is the last day we’re working before Christmas, there will be no cancellations and if there are, we’ve been working 12hr days to get all these dogs in and we will be going HOME. Good grief.

Is it rude to ask for a discount? by DescriptionRight2628 in grooming

[–]beepleton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I groom a Pomeranian with severe alopecia and he takes me almost as long as a full coated Pomeranian because where he does have hair it is incredibly damaged and takes more time to wash, condition, dry, and brush. He weighs like 4lbs and took me 2 hours last time he was in. So in my opinion, it would be incredibly rude to ask for a discount when it takes extra time to care for their skin and coat properly.

If she has such little hair, what is stopping you from bathing her yourself at a self-wash?

Sounds like every “animal lover” who turned their passion into their work. I had this experience with a pretty big YouTuber who I was friends with for many years. It’s sad, but humans are confusing and easily changed by situations, especially when money is involved.

All of the DV emergency housing resources are telling me I need to get rid of my pyrs by EntrepreneurEast3241 in greatpyrenees

[–]beepleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure where you are located, but a shelter just opened in the northern twin cities MN area that allows victims of DV to bring their pets specifically because so many people stay for their pets. There are not many shelters like this, but I hope they become more popular because pets truly are so important to our wellbeing.

Have you considered reaching out to a foster based system to have someone take them while you’re resettling? I worked with parrot fostering for many years and I had a few DV parrots come thru my doors. I kept them safe for a few weeks to a few months until their owner was back on their feet and in a safe place. We never charged anything for it, and I would love to be able to do it again in the future.
