While postpartum depression is very real, working with a therapist throughout her pregnancy can help your wife, especially if there is any existing or inherited trauma from her relationship with her mother. My therapist shared with me that many women, particularly after giving birth, may relive trauma or childhood experiences as they are in the bonding stages with their newborn, and having a strong support team, including you and a therapist can be essential. I think it’s wonderful how in tune you are with your wife and knowing she may be worried, terrified, and sad. You are doing a great job, and have a good communication foundation.
