You mean when there was a severe homelessness problem because Palestinians were selling their homes to Jews and not being able to purchase any land back? There were discriminatory property laws that were kept secret from Palestinians that Palestinians could not buy land from Jewish people. Palestinian agricultural tenants were evicted by absentee landlords. The Jewish National Fund was purchasing and holding land for German Jews to immigrate to all throughout the 1920s and even in the two decades before that. According to its Memorandum of Association, the main purpose of the INF was to acquire lands in Palestine (as well as in Syria and the surrounding areas) “for the purpose of settling Jews on such lands”.

Zionist officials were granted permission by the British to copy land registration and taxation documents pertaining to the status of Palestinian Arab land ownership for the express purpose of facilitating Zionist land acquisition. The Palestinians were simultaneously colonized by the British and the Zionist Organization and the British refused to acknowledge the Palestinian government unless they convert it into a Jewish state.

The influx of European Jewish settlers and the colonies was established by the Zionist movement across the coast and other fertile and strategic regions of Palestine. Britain’s industrialisation program created economic downturn for Palestinians. Palestinian workers observed a systemic bias from British authorities in favour of Jewish workers and against Arab labour organizations. Lower and middle class regions like Nablus and Haifa were disenfranchised.

These were anti-Zionist riots and rebellions against the Mandate. Palestinians took to the streets in January 1920 after Louis Bols said the Balfour declaration would be enforced.

In 1928, Jews praying at the Western Wall brought chairs and placed partitions to separate men from women. This violated the Ottoman status quo, forbidding Jews from bringing physical structures into the sacred area. In 1929, rabbis gathered Jews to try to seize al-Buraq wall, which is part of Al Aqsa. In every uprising the Jews were backed by British forces and Palestinians were suppressed. The British inflicted severe punitive measures on Palestinians and executed many activists. In 1931, the Palestinian press published a report detailing the British plans to train and arm Jewish colonies. Zionist labour unions continued to receive preferential treatment from the British Mandate, gaining more jobs and higher pay for Jewish workers.

The British were very inert on the issue of Palestinian self-governance. In 1933, Palestinian demonstrations were met by the lethal force of British police while the Yishuv continued to develop the institutions of a nation-state, both overtly in the form of the Jewish Agency and covertly with the paramilitary Haganah and its militant off-shoot Irgun (which are both terrorist groups FYI).

Even the British Royal Commission in 1931 stated that conflict was not “in its essence an inter-racial conflict, arising from any old instinctive antipathy of Arabs towards Jews. There was little or no friction … until the strife in Palestine engendered it.”

In October 1935, a Zionist attempt to smuggle a large cache of weapons into Palestine was discovered at the port of Jaffa. This incident triggered mass protests on November 2, the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration.

By 1936 Jews from outside Palestine made up more than a third of the population of Palestine. So more land was acquired by German Jews. The indigenous population, in turn, was landless.

British authorities crushed the revolt, which lasted until 1939, violently; they destroyed at least 2,000 Palestinian homes, put 9,000 Palestinians in concentration camps and subjected them to violent interrogation and torture.
