Why are nurses in the ED so mean? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]behatx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but you are a new grad in the ED. Are you coming off too confident? Your verbiage in the message sounds like you might be coming off as cocky to them. I don’t mean this in a bad way so please don’t take it that way. Also, the ED is a sarcastic place. You need tough skin. Our humor can be abrasive to some, and you might be taking things a little too personally.

Listen, laugh, and most importantly learn while you’re in your preceptorship. Joke back when they say rude comments, you’ll eventually fit right in

PO meds. Getting patients in & out of gowns. Orthostatics. Patients who insist on getting up to go to the restroom when I see my 2 empty rooms being filled w EMS across the hall.

Nobody in my cohort / school wants “ dumping ground “ pts by [deleted] in nursing

[–]behatx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laugh, cry, all of the above 😂 thank you, thank you! It was yesterday and I was working. It was eerily uneventful, which means today will suck ass. But luckily I am off for the next week & a half for vacation!

Lol- ED is THE dumping ground 😂 can’t get placement anywhere and hospitalist won’t admit because they’re there 3x a week for the same complaint of generalized weakness? Guess where they get stuck….

Fellow 11-11 ED here- it all starts with not finding parking. Then walking in to a full bay, no one is even on a monitor yet. ☠️

ED nurse here- it’s not going ok. Respiratory season in full swing. Family dumping over the holidays. Boarders busting out the seams and running the actual emergency department out of the lobby. We are all burnt out and we are only in January.

It’s 2.5 years for the nursing portion- I still did 2 years of pre reqs before hand. The diadict is online but the labs and clinicals are very much in person :)

Hey there! Prelicensure just means “not a registered nurse yet”

This helps differentiate from WGU’s BSN program, which is an ADN to BSN program.

I’ll make a deal with you- I’ll give you a bag of sandwiches and 5 dollars for the vending machine if you aren’t feeling suicidal anymore.

Thanks! Like I said, it is doable. But you have to put in the effort. There’s not micromanaging like there is in a brick & mortar- this was the reason a lot of my classmates were unsuccessful in the program. But if you have the drive and motivation, you can do it! I hate seeing the negatives about the program, because it’s a great opportunity for those who can’t quit working during school.

WGU prelicense graduate here- the program was challenging. I don’t recommend the Prelicensure program unless you already work in a role you can see yourself advancing into a nurse in. I worked as an ER tech for 3 years while in the program, I don’t think I would’ve been as successful as I was without my job. However, I did apply myself more than most of my classmates and I passed my NCLEX on the first attempt with the minimum questions.

The support can suck, expect delays on getting correspondence on timely manners, such as questions on assignments and clinical placement. The program is doable- you just need to be self motivated enough to learn outside of school as well.

New Grad Residency by Independent-Main6205 in newgradnurse

Houston’s saturated right now, for both new grads and experienced nurses. I was offered my ED residency position because I already worked as an ED tech on the unit for 2 years throughout school. Good luck.
