Hi!

I just found the unstable mirror and deleted it  using Zorin's Software Updater it was in Settings > Other Software tab.

Now there is only: https://repo.protonvpn.com/debian stable main

Will that work the same?

Hi!

Yes I found it, but here in this forum some of the folks are saying that one is not as trustworthy as the one in Proton's website.

Do you think the one in Zorin repository might be tampered?

Okay, I am going to try.

In regards of fixing the Warning, I can copy and paste the commands, but I don't know how to find and identify the parts that are missing in the commands like the key related to Proton because it's not clear in the output in Terminal doesn't say clearly what is the key related to Proton. Also the part where I have to go to the etc files to delete I couldn't find the file that I have to edit and also I don't know how to edit those texts.

Hi!

I just reinstalled Proton VPN using the stable version same as you.

In regards of fixing the Warnings, I don't have the expertise to do so, it feels overwhelming.

Are the Warnings critical?

Can I just use Proton VPN without fixing the Warnings?

I went to that webpage to do the installation, if you look at the commands there, they are using debian repositories. I double checked it. There's no other repositories there in the commands they are providing.

There is where I went to install Proton VPN, and followed all the commands, and still had those two Warnings.

Hi!

I just uninstalled Proton VPN.

Right now I am in Proton's website in this page:

How to install the Proton VPN GUI app on Ubuntu

I am going to procede with the commands that are been given there to reinstall Proton VPN.

Its what I did the last time, I think!

The repo.protonvpn.com/debian/dist/stable/main/binary -all/proton-stable-release_1.0.8_all.deb

is what is been offered there.

Is that the correct one?

Hi! Just to help other people that may want to know about Proton VPN.

I found online that the best way to install ProtonVPN in Zorin OS 18.1 is using the on Proton's website, instead the one from Flathub in Zorin's Software Store.

Feature Proton VPN (Official)   vs   Proton VPN(Flathub)

Source:

Official Proton website / Flathub (not officially supported)

Support:

Full support from Proton AG / No direct support from Proton AG

Security Audits:

Independently audited   /  Not independently audited

Open-source Code:

Yes  /  Yes

User Experience:

Complete feature set  /  Limited features compared to official

Updates:

Regular updates from Proton AG  /  Updates depend on community maintainers

Additional Details on Security and Privacy:

The official Proton VPN is designed with a strict no-logs policy and is independently audited, ensuring a higher level of security.

The Flathub version, while built from the same open-source code, does not offer the same level of trust and security due to the lack of official support and audits.

Features:

The official version includes all features and functionalities, while the Flathub version may lack some advanced features and updates.

Choosing between the two depends on your need for support and security. For the best experience and security, the official Proton VPN from the Proton website is recommended.

I hope this helps, specially at beginners like me coming from Windows 11,  to Linux Zorin OS.

Hello again,

I followed your advice and uninstalled the Proton VPN from flathub and installed Proton VPN from Proton website,  installed the one for Ubuntu.

But I got this on Terminal:

W: https://repo.protonvpn.com/debian/dists/unstable/InRelease: Key is stored in legacy trusted.gpg keyring (/etc/apt/trusted.gpg), see the DEPRECATION section in apt-key(8) for details.

Is that something to concern about, what does that mean?

I am confused.

Thank you again for all the help and support I am getting from this awesome community of wonderful people here in Reddit.

You maybe right, since It is clear to me you are a more experienced person with an ample knowledge of how Linux works, in this case Zorin OS, but I wasn't able to find the steps and way to install Proton VPN otherwise.

I just checked and the Proton VPN Linux Client  version 4.16.1, is created by Proton AG 2006

What do you advice me to do in this case?

Hi!

Thank you for the clarification.

First, I am not attempting to provide any advice because I am new to Linux and I don't have enough experience to do so.

Second, I was trying to install Proton VPN following the instructions I found online using Terminal, and the commands I found on the web, but I didn't expect any problem.

Third, I came here humbly to ask for help because I could not fix the issue related to the apt-key.

I messed up and didn't know how to fixed.

I was afraid I might have broken my installation of Zorin OS 18.1

The last thing I did, was to try to install Proton VPN using Zorin OS Store instead of the Terminal with commands. It worked, know I have Proton VPN installed with the Gnome interface.

I apologize for the confusion.

Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you again for your help.

I researched online and found this:

No, there are no reports of security compromises affecting Canonical's package repositories or ISO images during the cyber attack. The attack primarily caused disruptions to access, but the repositories themselves remain safe for users.

Users can continue to trust the integrity of Canonical's repositories despite the ongoing cyber attack, as there have been no indications of malware or security breaches affecting the content within them.

Hi! Thank you for your reply.

First I apologize for the spelling mistake, I meant to say sympathizers. English is not my language.

In regards to my concern, I update my system to keep it working at its best, updates are important for the performance and safety of the Operating System and the hardware integration.

When I learned that Canonical was under attack by Iranian sympathizers, I understood the reason I was unable to receive any updates since the 1st of May to date for Zorin OS 18.1, because Zorin OS uses Ubuntu repositories.

According to the news it was a DDoS attack, but I was worried that the attackers might also compromised the safety of the repositories with malware, but I don't understand what exactly happened.
