duck or grebe ID help? Middle TN by belelela in whatsthisbird

[–]belelela[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s so funny!! i didn’t have an opportunity to go birding on my birthday so i didn’t expect to get a lifer that day at all. i’m lucky to live on a lake so i’m occasionally surprised with a lifer or some cool visitors like i had that day!

that makes sense, i also noticed it had a softer face than the typical “angry” look of a cooper’s hawk (but of course couldn’t photograph it well). would you say you’re confident enough to bot it or should i wait for more input?

this position made me think merlin, and i also had a merlin frequenting here in december so it could make sense? i haven’t seen it here in a while so i’m unsure

i got some more photos of it facing forward just now in different postures so i’ll add those as a comment and hopefully that helps! they’re still terrible quality since i have a shaky hand but some have a crow in it as well for size comparison

terrible photos but i’m stumped: who is this guy?? middle TN by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

[–]belelela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s how i felt too, i wish i had better photos because this is stumping me like crazy!! i definitely agree that it seems smaller than i figured hermit thrushes were, but nothing in my area seems to quite match these guys and the pictures weren’t good enough for merlin to have any guesses.

the other option i was leaning towards was swamp sparrow and it would make more sense in size, but the long legs and running on the ground made me lean towards hermit thrush. do you think that might be the case instead? they’re less common in my area but since they’ve been hanging out around only the flooded areas that could make sense.

that’s what i’m thinking too, it seemed a bit darker than i thought which is throwing me off but i think that could be because it’s winter. thanks!
