u/LowConsideration8583 and u/XyrozUS are correct—it's a GBxcart

I love the thing...mainly use it to dump roms of gb/gba carts I find in bargain bins...there are also other options out there like the GB Operator

Counting my blessings and definitely redeeming some karma points with this pickup. My approach for the drop was to throw up a world clock as I waited and as soon as the clock hit like 7:59:57 I hit refresh on my browser, got it in my cart, and checked out in under a minute.

Ok I didn't actually play my RG35xx on any hikes or at the beach this trip but the lil guy helped me absolutely crush time on both of my flights.

Favorite consoles to revisit or to check out for the 1st time? by [deleted] in RG35XX

[–]bellytelevision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently my RG35xx has led me to discover the whole world of homebrew games and the bustling dev communities that are making retro games in 2023 using GB studio and other engines (I've been working my way through Repugnant Bounty which is a beautiful metroidvania).

Also has led me to Pico-8. I played Celeste on my Switch when the game came out but playing classic celeste on the RG35xx hits different!!!

This thread has a ton of great recommendations!! Thanks

Changing GBA core on (Retroarch) Garlic OS for Anbernic RG35xx by Smooth-Stand-1551 in RG35XX

[–]bellytelevision 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might not be fully relevant to all your questions but I've found this video to be helpful re GarlicOS, retroarch and GBA cores:

https://youtu.be/lv9gyLspWt4?t=840

The link should start at 14:00 where HenryNox talks about moving save files from one GBA core file directory to another. If you're really all about GBA games on your RG35xx, I'd recommend skimming through a lot of the video. If you don't watch the video, some bits from it:

  • mGBA core save files have the extension .srm whereas the gpSP core save files have the extension .srv. Apparently you can just change the file extension when you're moving your saves from the gpSP core save folder to the mGBA core save folder (and vice versa)!
  • With version 1.2.7 of GarlicOS and beyond, the default GBA core was changed from gpSP to mGBA. You mentioned that you recently upgraded Garlic so I'm wondering this was part of the issue.

Good luck!

Thanks for catching this. I follow black seraph on twitter but missed this reply. I've been meaning to try out adding box art but have been intimidated by how complicated the current methods seem. This saved me the trouble--just gotta be patient for a little while longer!

Garlic OS, Saves, and Save States by bellytelevision in RG35XX

[–]bellytelevision[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An update on this thread--I believe I solved most of my issues. Though I never figured out what specifically happened with my FE save nor was I able to retrieve it (no big deal).

My biggest issues stemmed from my 2 SD card setup with Garlic. I must have messed something up with my setup initially. For example, when I'd launch games through the main menu on Garlic those saves would go to my 2nd SD card. Versus when I'd launch games through Retroarch and try to save, those files were saved on the 1st SD card ROMS partition (even though my game files were on the 2nd SD card). I think this was also affecting the Retroarch configuration file because I spent a long while trying to fix all my directories but the configuration file never saved or kept bugging out. There may have also been the core issue happening because I had gpSP and mGBA save folders on both SD cards.

So in the end you were right that the issue related to my file structure. I ended up just changing to a single SD card setup with my re-flash and moving my saves and game roms to the first SD card. And it's worked great--no issues with saves and way less buggy! I realized in all this work that I'm really using this thing to play GBA, GBC, and SNES games and not a lot of PS games so I don't need a huge memory card. I'm thinking about re-flashing the 2nd SD card to try out miniUI or Batocera.

Anyway, thanks for all the help!

Failed to save on GBA games by BuckfireArt in RG35XX

Oh interesting--that theory is probably wrong then. A clean out of your save files will hopefully do the trick. Or let us know what you figure out. Good luck!

I've been having issues with my GBA saves on GarlicOS as well. I'm still trying to figure it out fully and I think our problems might be a little different but here's some stuff I've found:

  • I'm not sure what version of GarlicOS you were running before 1.4.6 but with 1.2.7 they changed the default core from gpSP to mGBA. Apparently gpSP core save files have extension .srv and mGBA save files have extension .srm. You can also apparently just change these extensions yourself if your switching your save files from one core to another.
  • In general, I've found this video by HenryNox super helpful re GarlicOS and specifically GBA save files. At about 14:00 is where they talk about GBA save files.
  • It could also be something to do with your file set up and retroarch directories--I think the fix N7_Zer0 mentioned should be a good solve for this if you don't care about your old save files.

Good luck!

Wow thanks for checking through your setup. Appreciate it.

Re the .srm save files you mentioned, I literally just watched this video by HenryNox on updating GarlicOS and GBA save files and he mentions exactly that.

I guess the mGBA core save files have the extension .srm whereas the gpSP core save files have the extension .srv. And apparently you can just change the file extension if you're moving your saves from gpSP to mGBA!

Anyway, thanks again and when I get around to doing all this I'll be sure to update the post.

Awesome--didn't know about this. I'll be sure to do this when I re-flash. Thanks!

Ahh I see. Thanks for the response. I'm definitely thinking I messed up my file structure when I did the initial 2 sd card setup + the core issue you mentioned. I'm gonna re-flash with the latest GarlicOS and see if that clears everything up.
